Winter Commencement 2018: The Journey Continues

“I want you to tell your stories because stories inspire.” Hundreds of mortarboard-laden heads nodded in agreement as President Freeman Hrabowski addressed the audience during UMBC’s 2018 Commencement Ceremonies. This year’s ceremonies were the first winter exercises to be held in UMBC’s new Event Center. The location may have changed, but the sentiments remained the same. Family, friends, faculty, and staff arrived in droves to show their support for the newest cohort of UMBC alumni. As they prepared to turn their tassels, members of Retriever Nation heard a final thought from President Hrabowski: “Know that you will always be connected… Continue Reading Winter Commencement 2018: The Journey Continues

Staging Important Conversations: She Like Girls

Trying to make it through high school unscarred is difficult, but trying to balance it while discovering one’s sexuality can feel impossible. That’s the story of Kia and Marisol, who struggle to find acceptance in an intolerant community in Chisa Hutchinson’s She Like Girls – the Department of Theatre’s latest production, running now through October 28. The department strives to produce new plays from diverse playwrights in its seasonal productions. Selecting Hutchinson’s work – she’s an acclaimed new African-American playwright – furthered that goal says director, Eve Muson, who chose the play, in part, to fit her students. “We have… Continue Reading Staging Important Conversations: She Like Girls

Bookstore Bob Leaves the Building

Rooted in the far corner, a leafy green plant has grown nearly across the office, curling around a large ticking clock, and hugging framed photographs a proud father has mounted on the wall. It keeps going, its stem and leaves circling the desktop monitor, dangling just beneath the ceiling. Below it sits its owner, “Bookstore Bob” Somers, mustachioed manager of the UMBC Bookstore. He brought a much smaller, nearly-dead version of the plant with him when the shop moved to The Commons from the University Center 16 years ago. “I thought I’d kill it right away,” he says, with his… Continue Reading Bookstore Bob Leaves the Building
