Slice of Life: Pi Day at UMBC

Who doesn’t love a delicious piece of pie? Well, at UMBC we also love our pi, the infinite decimal 3.14 essential for so many computations (and puns). Our love is completely rational, we swear, even if pi is not! So, what does Pi Day look like at #RetrieverNation? Here’s a quick peek at the day’s fun… INFINITE SLICES?? — UMBC Dining Services served up delicious plates of pie all day. Looks yummy, no? ON THE NUMBERS — Grad student Cameron Rhode outdid himself by reciting pi to the 250th digit! MASCOTS

Five Reasons to <3 UMBC Basketball Right Now

It’s always a wonderful time to be a Retriever. After all, we have grit and greatness to spare. But now is also an especially amazing moment to break out the black and gold to cheer on UMBC basketball. On Saturday, in its first America East playoff home game in a decade, the second-seeded UMBC men’s basketball team hit back stronger than ever, after being down 11 points in the first half, to outscore No. 7 UMass Lowell, and come away with a decisive 89-77 victory. Thanks to this win, UMBC will host a semifinal round game versus No. 3 Hartford… Continue Reading Five Reasons to <3 UMBC Basketball Right Now

The Poet’s Brush: Chinese Ink Paintings by Lo Ch’ing

The Center for Art, Design and Visual Culture presents The Poet’s Brush: Chinese Ink Paintings by Lo Ch’ing, on display February 1 through March 17. The exhibition features paintings by Lo Ch’ing, a Chinese poet-painter who creates art simultaneously rooted in tradition and expressive of contemporary sensibility. His works describe a path between the strong currents of his own short past, the millennia-old past of the Chinese empire, and the demands of today’s postindustrial, consumer-driven and individualist global citizen. The exhibition, curated by University of Maryland professor Jason Kuo, comprises 30 artworks and represents the artist’s first show in the… Continue Reading The Poet’s Brush: Chinese Ink Paintings by Lo Ch’ing

New House of Grit Doesn’t Disappoint

UMBC’s Retrievers officially moved into a new Dawg House Saturday, sharing the excitement of their first Event Center ballgame with a sold-out crowd of fans bedecked in black and gold. But despite a disappointing loss to rival Vermont (81-53), the stadium couldn’t contain the enthusiasm of the more than 4,700 Retriever Believers who helped usher in a new era of UMBC athletics. “I thought it was awesome! It was really crowded and the facilities were great, and…it felt like we were coming together as a campus, as a school,” said Marissa O’Connor, a sophomore soccer player who enjoyed the men’s… Continue Reading New House of Grit Doesn’t Disappoint

A Peek Behind the Curtains: Twelfth Night at UMBC

For most of us, a trip to the theatre means relaxing in a plush auditorium chair for a couple of hours while performers share their finely honed skills for our amusement. We laugh, we cry, and we clap wildly as the stars bow before the falling curtain. But, what do we miss when we forget about what happens backstage? For the upcoming production of William Shakespeare’s comedy Twelfth Night, directed by Eve Muson, (running Nov. 9 – 19) students and theatre faculty worked diligently for weeks to design and build sets, sew costumes, install lighting and sound plots, and develop… Continue Reading A Peek Behind the Curtains: Twelfth Night at UMBC

Slideshow: Moving In at UMBC

Move-in day is a highly anticipated undertaking for college students everywhere, and UMBC is no exception. Lugging their suitcases, decorative furnishings, and pre-semester anxieties, UMBC students swarm the campus to turn their little dorm into home for the next four months. Sometimes they enjoy a little help from family and friends. Below are recent images of Retrievers moving in and enjoying the campus-wide welcome. A big thank-you to Alexis Harris ’19 for taking the photos! [nivoslider id=”8438″] Move-in day excitement always carries over into Welcome Week activities where students meet up with old friends and make new ones, too! Bmore Engaged

The Lion Brothers Building, part of the southwest Baltimore landscape for over 130 years, was once used for sewing Girl Scout patches and screen printing. Now the former factory space is a physical tie between downtown and UMBC. The exposed brick walls and floor-to-ceiling windows house spaces to learn, create, exhibit, and connect to the culture that is unique to Baltimore. Academic programs in the arts, humanities, and social sciences now have a designated space to experience civic engagement, service learning, and cultural exploration outside of a traditional campus setting. Located just off MLK Boulevard, the building has provided unique… Continue Reading Bmore Engaged

Good Sport

UMBC Athletics Director Tim Hall has been named the new president of the Division I-AAA Athletics Directors Association (ADA) for the 2017–18 academic year. Hall, who recently entered his fifth year as the Retrievers’ athletics director, previously served as ADA 1st vice president in 2016 – 17. The organization serves more than 1,600 institutions. “There are so many critical issues that athletic directors face in today’s climate and this group has always put the studentathlete in the center of its bulls-eye,” said Hall. “I am anxious to get started guiding this committed group of leaders.” Hall currently serves on the… Continue Reading Good Sport

Leaders in Transformation

The Association of American Colleges and Universities (AAC&U) has selected UMBC as one of 10 institutions nationwide to participate in a bold, new initiative designed to “educate, prepare, and inspire the next generation of leaders to advance justice and build equitable communities.” Participating colleges and universities will establish Truth, Racial Healing and Transformation (TRHT) Campus Centers to engage campus and community stakeholders around issues impacting racial equity, such as conscious and unconscious bias. AAC&U President Lynn Pasquerella shares that this is the first piece of a broader vision “to ensure that higher education is playing a leadership role in promoting… Continue Reading Leaders in Transformation

#YouAreWelcomeHere: Making International Students Feel Right at Home

Upon entering the UMBC campus, visitors arriving at the drop-off circle in front of the Administration Building are greeted in a way that’s uniquely UMBC — with bricks saying “Welcome” in dozens of languages from around the world. The greetings are subtle but plentiful, displayed on the grey areas of the brick pavement. This is but a small example of the many ways that diversity is celebrated on this campus, including the numerous flags of the world on display in The Commons, the variety of culturally-based clubs and organizations, and more. And, UMBC is always finding new ways to welcome international students to our campus,… Continue Reading #YouAreWelcomeHere: Making International Students Feel Right at Home
