Volunteer Opportunities

The Office of Alumni Engagement offers multiple volunteer opportunities throughout the year with time commitments ranging from one to two hours per activity done in a single day, to ongoing opportunities such as chapter and group recurring meetings and related events.

Volunteering offers the chance to connect with other Retrievers, UMBC faculty, staff, and current or prospective students. It provides an opportunity to remain engaged with UMBC, to strengthen your personal and professional networks, and to gain additional skills. • Admissions: The best advertisement is a satisfied customer. Help out at admissions events on campus and regionally, write personalized postcards, or pipe up on social media about our grit and greatness. 
• Commencement: Winter and spring commencement take a Retriever village to produce. Help out by directing graduates during the ceremony, fixing caps and gowns, or sharing a token on behalf of the Alumni Association.
• Careers:
  • Network: Join our networking platform, Retrievers Connect, that connects alumni and students by industry or profession. Also, build connections with students, speak on a panel, conduct mock interviews, and share internships and full-time opportunities through Handshake.
  • Career Month: Alumni can share their expertise on panels and at networking events. Career Month is held every April.
• Donate:
  • Retriever Essentials: Retriever Essentials supports students facing food insecurity. In a Hope Lab survey, more than 40% of four-year college students faced limited or uncertain nutritionally adequate food. Donate nonperishable food or toiletries, partner on a larger drive, or give funds to support this effort by contacting lavon.davis@umbc.edu.
