Anna Shields, MLLI, to Present Talk at the Library of Congress (4/16)

On April 16, Anna Shields, associate professor of Chinese, will present a talk on her new book One Who Knows Me: Friendship and Literary Culture in Mid-Tang China (Harvard University Press, 2015). In the book, Shields shares her research on the friendship among writers in the mid-Tang era (780s-820s). Zakaria Fatih, MLLI, Selected as Review Editor of The French Review

Zakaria Fatih, modern languages, linguistics and intercultural communication, has been selected to the editorial staff of the French Review, the journal of the American Association of Teachers of French. After serving two years as the Assistant Editor, he has been promoted to the position of Review Editor (section: Culture and Society). On November 2, 2014, Associate Professor Elaine Rusinko received the John Mihalasky Humanitarian Award from the Carpatho-Rusyn Society. MLLI Faculty and Students Featured in Russia Beyond the Headlines, Voice of America

On December 7, the UMBC Russian Club presented an evening of Russian song, cuisine, and fashion to promote cross-cultural understanding and to look beyond recent news headlines of strained diplomacy between the United States and Russia. The event was held in the University Center Ballroom, with support from the Modern Languages, Linguistics, and Intercultural Communication (MLLI) department, the Russian Embassy, and the Russian Center for Science and Culture. Ana Maria Schwartz Caballero, MLLI, Receives NFL Hispanic Heritage Leadership Award

Baltimore Ravens fans were treated to a special event during the September 28 game: Ana Maria Schwartz Caballero, modern languages, linguistics and intercultural communication, received the 2014 NFL Hispanic Heritage Leadership Award. Anna Shields, MLLI, Awarded Henry Luce Foundation/American Council of Learned Societies Grant

Anna Shields, an associate professor of modern languages, linguistics and intercultural communication, is part of a three-person team that has been awarded a Henry Luce Foundation/American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS) grant for a collaborative reading workshop in 2015. Shields, along with two colleagues at Cornell University and the University at Albany, were co-organizers of the grant, which was submitted in November. They were awarded $10,000 for the reading workshop, at which they will be studying the historical development of what “literary competence” meant in the Tang dynasty, looking at historical and literary texts from the 7th-9th centuries. Vivian Ekey ’11 Chosen as Rangel Fellow

Vivian Ekey ’11, political science and modern languages and linguistics, was recently chosen to be a Rangel Fellow. The Rangel Graduate Fellowship is a program that aims to attract and prepare outstanding young people for careers in the Foreign Service in which they can help formulate, represent and implement U.S. foreign policy. Each year, the Rangel Program selects 20 outstanding Rangel Fellows in a highly competitive nationwide process and helps support them through two years of graduate study, internships and professional development activities, and entry into the Foreign Service. Alex Onischuk ’07, Modern Languages and Linguistics, Named Director of Texas Tech Chess Program

Alex Onischuk ’07, modern languages and linguistics, was named the director of Texas Tech University’s chess program on July 30, according to an article in The Lubbock Avalanche-Journal. The Ukraine-born grandmaster was captain of UMBC’s chess team, during a period in which the team won four consecutive national championships from 2002 to 2006. Texas Tech’s team are also champions, winning the President’s Cup for the second consecutive year this year.
