Goalkeeper Billy Heavner ’17 receives top academic honor in U.S. college sports

UMBC goalkeeper and men’s soccer co-captain Billy Heavner ’17, financial economics, has been selected to the 2015 Academic All-America Division I Men’s Soccer First Team by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Heavner is the second UMBC men’s soccer player to receive this top academic honor, following in the footsteps of fullback Liam Paddock ’13, psychology and sociology, who earned the distinction in 2012. He is the seventh student-athlete in Retriever history to earn first team honors and the 22nd UMBC athlete to be cited by CoSIDA since 1977. Hassan Omar becomes UMBC’s first cross country All-American

UMBC’S Hassan Omar ’16, mechanical engineering, concluded a phenomenal cross country career with the Retrievers by finishing 27th at the NCAA Championships on Saturday,  November 21. Omar is an exemplary scholar-athlete — a Meyerhoff Scholar recognized as an All-Academic runner, who is now UMBC’s first cross country runner to be named an All-American. UMBC Athletics reports that Omar completed the 10k course in a time of 30:16, besting his NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regionals time by 31 seconds. Billy Heavner Named to CoSIDA Academic All-District Team

UMBC junior goalkeeper Billy Heavner has been named to the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-District Men’s Soccer Team, as the organization announced all of its men’s and women’s regional recipients. Heavner earned First Team All-District honors for District 2. First-team Academic All-Districtâ„¢ honorees advance to the CoSIDA Academic All-America® Team ballot, where first-, second- and third-team All-America honorees will be selected later this month.

Pete Caringi, Men’s Soccer, Profiled in The Baltimore Sun for Excellent Coaching and Leadership

As the UMBC men’s soccer team gears up for another season, The Baltimore Sun featured Coach Pete Caringi for his excellent leadership of the Retrievers. Last year, Caringi led the team to the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) College Cup and was named Division I Coach of the Year by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. Women’s Lacrosse Program: A Message From Pres. Hrabowski and Provost Rous

President Freeman Hrabowski and Provost Philip Rous share the following message with the UMBC community regarding the women’s lacrosse program: We want to provide the campus with information about the recent matter involving our women’s lacrosse team. UMBC’s Oumar Ballo Inks Deal With MLS’ Houston Dynamo

UMBC All-American soccer standout Oumar Ballo has been signed by the Houston Dynamo of Major League Soccer. The Dynamo selected Ballo in the second round with the 30th overall selection of the 2015 MLS SuperDraft. Ballo helped lead UMBC to the NCAA Tournament College Cup (Final Four) in 2014 for the first time in program history. A two-time NSCAA-All American, Ballo was named America East Conference Defender of the Year in 2014. Ballo has appeared in two games this preseason. The Dynamo open their tenth season on Saturday, March 7, 2015 at BBVA Compass Stadium against Columbus Crew SC.

Swimming and Diving Teams Win Championships

Last week, the women’s swimming and diving team won the 2015 America East Championship with 791 points. The men’s swimming and diving team became the 2015 Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association (CCSA) champions several days later. This year marks the fourth year in school history that the UMBC women’s swimming and diving team has won the America East Championship. Sophomore Emily Escobedo won the Most Outstanding Swimmer of the Meet award and Coach Chad Cradock, as well as assistants Chris Gibeau, Brandt Nigro, Rob Bellamy and diving coach Petar Trifonov, earned Coaching Staff of the Year.
