Meet the Staff: Arooj Rana ’06, 50th Anniversary Program Assistant

Here in the Office of Alumni Relations, we spend a lot of time telling stories about and talking with our wonderfully supportive alums. However, we’ve decided to turn the tables and take time to get to know the people behind the scenes – the  advancement and alumni relations staff members who are hard at work on behalf of our alumni. Today we’ll be hearing from Arooj Rana ’06, psychology, who is one of the 50th anniversary program assistants in the Office of Alumni Relations. She is also working towards a master’s degree in public policy at UMBC. Name: Arooj Rana Job Title: 50th… Continue Reading Meet the Staff: Arooj Rana ’06, 50th Anniversary Program Assistant

Freedom of Expression: Majid, Alexander

Every so often, we shine a spotlight on alumni who have made the news recently, in Baltimore and beyond. Today, we’re featuring two alums who are making an impact through creative expression, whether through storytelling or visual art. Asif Majid ’13, interdisciplinary studies, former class valedictorian and current instructor at UMBC, will relay his tale of getting lost on a pilgrimage to Mecca at the February 10 Stoop Storytelling event at the Senator Theatre in Baltimore. Stoop Storytelling is now in its 10th year, and was created to “foster empathy and build a community” in Baltimore, both by empowering citizens to tell their own… Continue Reading Freedom of Expression: Majid, Alexander

Here’s who (and how much snow) made the news this week: In case you hadn’t heard, it snowed a lot in Baltimore this past weekend, and UMBC was one of many schools affected by the record accumulation. Residential students were able to move in Wednesday, and spring semester classes began Thursday. Baltimore Sun columnist Dan Rodricks has some ideas on how the city might deal with future blizzards, and he references a conversation with Don Norris, public policy, about the pros and cons of regional governance. Kimberly Moffitt, American studies, discussed the influence of present events on this year’s Black History Month… Continue Reading Link Roundup: UMBC in the News

Here’s how we made the news this week: UMBC is one of many area schools that may be disrupted by this weekend’s predicted “historic” winter storm. Susan Hoban, JCET, gave a lecture on the changing climate and trends of earth at Ferris State University. President Hrabowski delivered the keynote address in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. at a Purdue University commemoration. Joseph DeMattos, Erickson School, says retirement communities offer unique opportunities for younger adults to balance personal space and privacy with parental caregiving. Happy Holidays!

We here in Alumni Relations wish you and yours a warm, happy holiday season. (And by warm, we don’t necessarily mean the temperature, though if you’re in Maryland that definitely seems to be the case.) If you’d like to brighten the season a little more by making a year-end gift to UMBC, you can do that here before midnight on December 31. After that, it’s a brand new year, and with that brand new year comes our 50th anniversary! See you all in 2016!

Read more about Dykstra and his work with NSA at Fedscoop.       Jamie Butler ’02, M.S. computer… Continue Reading Alums in the News: Eye on CompSci
