Up on the Roof

In his final months at UMBC, Freeman Hrabowski has been hitting the road visiting alumni and friends in a variety of cities as part of the RetriEVER Grateful Tour. Sharing a moment in his office this March, Hrabowski talked a bit about what the tour and his last semester as president have been like and what excites him about the future of UMBC. UMBC Magazine: You were just in Annapolis for the first stop of the RetriEVER Grateful Tour last night, with quite a few more stops around the country to come, and you’ve also been sharing the UMBC story… Continue Reading Up on the Roof

Up on the Roof – Spring 2019

In 1989, Baltimore philanthropist Robert E. Meyerhoff sat down with then-UMBC vice provost Freeman Hrabowski with a bold vision for the University—to create a program that would offer high-achieving African American men a doorway into STEM scholarship at the highest levels. Thirty years later, the Meyerhoff Scholars Program is a national leader on the forefront of efforts to increase diversity among future leaders—both women and men—in science, engineering, and related fields. Because of that, UMBC is also the leading producer nationally of African American undergraduates who go on to earn M.D./Ph.D. degrees. This spring, as the program celebrates its 30th… Continue Reading Up on the Roof – Spring 2019

Ask the President – Spring 2018

Q: I was wondering if you had any advice for a finance student? — Godwin Okoro, senior financial economics student A: I think it’s really important that students work with our Career Center, where the staff members do a superb job of giving advice to students about opportunities. We have many employer partnerships. And I hope that you participated in the recent Career Fair where we had over 100 employers. It’s critical that students apply for internships beginning after their freshman year, because practical experience will give them increasing opportunities. For a senior, the most important advice is to listen… Continue Reading Ask the President – Spring 2018

Up on the Roof – Winter 2016

UMBC President Freeman A. Hrabowski, III, takes your questions. The role of UMBC’s staff members in the story of the university’s rise to prominence is often overlooked. If things are going well, everyone’s happy, and no one even thinks about the fact that the place is operating as it should. What people don’t know if they have not been involved in the operation of the institution is… Continue Reading Up on the Roof – Winter 2016

Up On the Roof – Winter 2012

UMBC President Freeman A. Hrabowski, III takes your questions.   Q. Considering that Time magazine named The Protestor as its 2011 Person of the Year and knowing your own active involvement in the civil rights movement, what are your thoughts on the amount of violent opposition present-day protesters are facing across the nation? — Joseph Cooper IV ’08, English A. People have the right to protest. I have to remind people about that at times. America was built out of protest. If we had not protested, we would not have America. At the same time, a number of institutions have… Continue Reading Up On the Roof – Winter 2012

Up on the Roof – Fall 2011

UMBC President Freeman A. Hrabowski, III takes your questions. Q. UMBC ended its successful Exceptional by Example capital campaign by raising $15 million more than the $100 million target for the effort. What gave you the faith that this target of $100 million could be met? How gratified are you that the goal was surpassed in the end? — Richard Byrne ’86 A. I am very encouraged by the success of the campaign. We appreciate the support that people have given us. This success also lays the foundation for future campaigns. What we’ve been doing at UMBC is developing a… Continue Reading Up on the Roof – Fall 2011
