Alums Impact Communities Through Careers

Mario Angulo Alvarado ‘15, political science, wants to bring positive change to his community. Studying at the Universities at Shady Grove (USG) campus, he made a start on his life’s ambition by serving as USG Student Council president, with guidance from Dr. Andrew Nolan and Chelsea Moyer, program coordinator and Peer Advisory Team manager. UMBC alums are taking off into new realms as advancements continue to be made in space exploration and engineering. Erika Nesvold ’09, mathematics and physics, M.S. ’11 applied physics, Ph.D. ’15 physics, and Isaac Matthews (M15) ’07, mechanical engineering, are both receiving attention for their incredible work within the aerospace community. Looks like good things happen in pairs for Retrievers! Four members of our community have been recognized in the media for their hard work. Rachel Hirsch and Miguel Palmeiro were featured on The Daily Record’s list of successful professionals under 40, and alum Jim Bailey and current student Seamus Ertel have been featured in two Baltimore Sun articles recognizing their dedication to Baltimore’s historic Fort McHenry. Rachel Hirsch ’03, political science, and Miguel Palmeiro ’06, biological sciences, are on The Daily Record’s 2015 VIP Successful Before 40 list. If there were such a thing as extreme sports fairy tales, Marla Streb ’91, M.S., marine estuarine science,would be fairy godmother of that daredevil realm. Once upon a time, at the relatively advanced age of 28, Streb walked away from a career as an AIDS research biologist and fashioned herself into a world champion mountain bike racer and gravity goddess. As a career move, it was akin to selling your master’s degree in marine-estuarine environmental science for a handful of magic beans, but Streb made it work – and marvelously. UMBC has been making some major cosmetic changes to our campus lately and construction workers have become the newest members of the Retriever community. The Alumni Association wanted to spread the news to all of our Alums, especially those of you who have not been to campus in awhile. Renovations to the West Hill Apartment communities Over the past year, construction crews have been working on the renovation of the West Hill Apartment complex.
