UMBC Night at Oriole Park

More than 375 alumni and friends enjoyed a night of fun at this year’s annual UMBC Night at Oriole Park, on August 27. Guests enjoyed food in the bullpen and some snazzy UMBC-branded O’s caps — not to mention a 7-0 win over the Toronto Blue Jays! We hope to see you at an upcoming UMBC alumni event soon. ITE Happy Hour at Jailbreak Brewing Company

Graduates of the UMBC College of Engineering and Information Technology and those who now work in the IT field gathered for a networking happy hour this week at Jailbreak Brewing Company in Laurel. Highlights included a meet and greet with Dr. Keith Bowman, the new dean of the college, as well as plenty of food, drinks and connections with other IT&E Retriever alumni, faculty and staff. CYA Wine Tasting 2018

UMBC’s Chapter of Young Alumni welcomed more than 200 alumni and guests for the 13th Annual Wine Tasting and Silent Auction last month at the Scottish Rite Masonic Temple in Baltimore. In addition to enjoying an array of delicious food, wines, and jazz, guests also contributed more than $5,425 for the Alumni Endowed Scholarship Fund. Plus, WYPR’s own Al Spoler from “Cellar Notes” gave some welcome insight into the night’s libations. Sticking With It: Lacrosse Coach Lloyd Carter ’97, M.S. ’09

Though he never set foot on UMBC’s field as a player, the lacrosse career of Lloyd Carter ’97, M.S. ’09, emergency health services, began years before his time as a Retriever, and continues today through his role as head coach of Hampton University’s Division I squad. Carter, who for years balanced coaching jobs with a lengthy leadership career in firefighting for Baltimore City, founded the program at Hampton just three years ago, making it the only team of its kind among the historically black college and university (HBCU) system. UMBC celebrated its newest alumni last week with a May Grads Day celebration. Sheltered from a spring storm, more than 200 members of the Class of 2018 gathered for an evening of music and merriment — including a champagne toast. Congratulations to our new Retriever alumni! Practice Makes Perfect: Students Network with Alums at Career Month

If you could do it all over again, what would you tell your younger self? This is the concept behind “Interview an Alum,” a new initiative designed by the UMBC Alumni Board of Directors (AABOD) and the UMBC Career Center.
