One of the things that makes UMBC great is how wonderful our alumni, students, faculty, and staff are. Because of these amazing people, UMBC often finds itself “in the news,” so each week, we’ll be sharing with you a round-up of the most newsworthy achievements from our community. Dennis Coates and Brad Humphries, economics, have found that sports stadiums depress local wages for workers in other entertainment-related fields. Faculty and Alumni Recognized by Maryland State Arts Council

A number of UMBC faculty members and alumni received 2015 Individual Artist Awards from the Maryland State Arts Council. The Maryland State Arts Council awards grants to individual artists and non-profit organizations for arts programming, projects, and assistance. Timothy Nohe, visual arts, was recognized in the non-classical music composition category, while Susan McCully, theatre, and Mark Squirek ’91, history, were honored in the playwriting category. Ben Marcin ’80, economics, and Jaimes Mayhew ’10 M.F.A., imaging and digital arts, received awards in the photography category. Click here to see the complete list of winners.

Young and Hungry

What to do when you achieve a dream job before 30? Brigitte Pribnow Moore ’05, theatre, says you should expand the scope and ambition of that dream. Moore is the executive director of the Washington, D.C.-based Young Playwrights’ Theater (YPT), a group that fosters arts education in area schools via playwriting and allows highschool writers to collaborate with professional theatre makers to see their own work on the stage. Video: Shakespeare Sonnets Recited in More Than 30 Languages at UMBC

[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=49cU4EExLAI&w=560&h=315] On April 23, 2014, UMBC students, faculty and staff recited Shakespeare sonnets in more than 30 languages. The event was held to celebrate Shakespeare’s birthday and UMBC’s diverse voices. It took place at the end of Undergraduate Research and Creative Achievement Day (URCAD), and it was sponsored by the Dresher Center for the Humanities, the Office of Undergraduate Education and the English and Theatre Departments. Faculty, PAHB in Baltimore Sun

The Baltimore Sun’s special education supplement last month featured William D’Eugenio ’14, theatre, and Nyalls Hartman, theatre, as they discussed the features of the Black Box Theatre and the Performing Arts and Humanities Building Theatre. D’Eugenio spoke about the influence the new facilities had in his decision to apply to UMBC and become a part of the theatre design and production program, saying that “they are built to the standards of today and offer a real broadway style experience. Production by Alan Kreizenbeck, Theatre, at David Mikow Art Gallery

comfort/drones, an original production by Alan Kreizenbeck, theatre, will open in the David Mikow Art Gallery, Friday, November 17 at 7 p.m. The play, based on the writings of Wallace Shawn, is embedded with questions about morality. It is the first play to take place in the David Mikow Art Gallery, operated by Carolyn Forestiere, political science, and Asher Mikow. A group discussion will follow the performance. Performances will take place Friday and Sunday, November 17 and 19, and Saturday and Sunday, November 23 and 24, at 7pm each evening. The Fringe NYC performances of Inexcusable Fantasies — written by Susan McCully, theatre, and directed by Eve Muson, theatre — received praise in a NYTheatre.com review released last week. UMBC Alums to make B.F.A.: The Series

A group of UMBC theatre alumni have something to say about life in the arts, and they’re saying it with a new Baltimore-based web series, B.F.A. On the group’s Indiegogo fundraising page, they explain the series: B.F.A. is a new web series about young theatre artists in Baltimore. B.F.A. stands for Bachelor of Fine Arts, but also many other things, including Baltimore, Friends, and Artists. Fringe NYC Production Featuring Theatre Faculty in The Villager
