Pres. Hrabowski Discusses ACE Fellows Program in “Diverse”

A recent article about the American Council on Higher Education (ACE) Fellows Program in the publication Diverse: Issues in Higher Education quotes President Hrabowski. President Hrabowski Discusses College Access in Trusteeship Magazine

UMBC President Freeman Hrabowski recently wrote an essay on the importance of education to the promise of the American Dream in Trusteeship, a magazine published by the Association of Governing Boards of Colleges and Universities. President Hrabowski on EvoLLLution

President Hrabowski participated in an interview about innovation and the changing culture of higher education on EvoLLLution, an online newspaper focusing on continuing education. As USM Seeks New Chancellor, Pres. Hrabowski Affirms Commitment to UMBC

On Tuesday, Dr. William “Brit” Kirwan announced his plans to retire as chancellor of the University System of Maryland (USM). As the search begins for a new chancellor, the Baltimore Business Journal and Washington Business Journal have highlighted President Hrabowski as an exceptional Maryland leader, recognized nationally for his commitment to helping students from all backgrounds succeed. WBJ Managing Editor Robert Terry says our president has “proven himself a visionary,” but Hrabowksi affirms he is staying put. “I’m seeing how we are building an institution that’s a national model,” Hrabowski says. “I really do believe in UMBC.”

Pres. Hrabowski and UMBC Students Headline U.S. News STEM Solutions Conference

President Hrabowski and three undergraduate scholars from UMBC kicked off the U.S. News STEM Solutions conference with a keynote panel on April 23. Dalton Hughes ’14, chemical engineering, Lauren Mazzoli ’15, mathematics and computer science, and Mitchel Zavala ’14, mechanical engineering, spoke about their UMBC experiences in a discussion moderated by PBS Newshour co-anchor Judy Woodruff. Pres. Hrabowski to Receive Honorary Degree from Arizona State University

President Hrabowski will receive an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree from Arizona State University during their May 14th undergraduate commencement ceremony. This honor recognizes President Hrabowski’s work promoting educational achievement for all students, regardless of background. An ASU press release announcing the honor specifically highlights his work promoting the success of students from underrepresented minorities in STEM fields, and his role as chair of the President’s Advisory Commission on Educational Excellence for African Americans.

President Hrabowski Participates in Launch of White House Initiative

On Thursday, February 27, President Obama launched My Brother’s Keeper, a White House initiative that empowers young men of color. My Brother’s Keeper will partner with businesses, government officials, faith leaders, non-profit organizations and private groups. These groups have pledged to invest in programs aimed at helping men of color, and replicate successful efforts across the country. The Daily Record recently named President Hrabowski and Alum Diane Bell-McKoy ’73, sociology, in their 2014 list of Influential Marylanders. Influential Marylanders celebrates people who have made significant impacts in their fields and continue to be leaders in Maryland. Winners are chosen in the categories of civic leadership, communications, education, finance and more. Bell-Mckoy, President and CEO of Associated Black Charities, was selected in the civic leadership category, while Dr. Hrabowski was chosen for his work as UMBC’s president in the education category. Thomas Schaller, Political Science, in the Baltimore Sun and NYT

In the last week of December, UMBC political science professor Thomas Schaller published a year-in-review in the Baltimore Sun, highlighting Maryland’s legalization of same-sex marriage, the rise of Gov.
