UMBC Men’s Soccer Program Selected to Finish Fourth in 2012 America East Conference

The UMBC men’s soccer program was selected to finish fourth in the 2012 America East Conference race by the league’s eight head coaches. The Retrievers placed fourth in the conference in 2011, earning a place in the six-team postseason tournament for the third consecutive year. UMBC had played in the league’s title game in both 2009 and 2010, winning the championship and advancing in the NCAA Championships in 2010. Read the full press release here.

Charles Brown, Athletics, on MPT’s “State Circle”

Associate Vice President/Director of Athletics Dr. Charles Brown appeared on Maryland Public Television’s “State Circle” program on Friday, June 29. Dr. Brown discussed the effect that Title IX has had on intercollegiate athletics with host Jeff Salkin. The 30-minute program will be available for online viewing at http://video.mpt.tv.

Joe Adewumi ’12 Named to Capital One District 2 All-Academic Squad

UMBC senior tennis standout Joe Adewumi has been named to the Capital One Academic All-District men’s at-large team by the College Sports Information Director of America. Adewumi was one of 15 honorees from District 2 of the NCAA Division I level. He will now be considered for Academic All-America honors, along with those recipients from the other seven districts. The highly-decorated Adewumi was recently selected to the America East Tennis All-Academic squad, earning the honor in each of his three years of eligibility. Chase Plummer ’14 Selected to America East Second Team

Sophomore forward Chase Plummer was selected to the America East Conference Second Team, it was announced today at the University of Harford, site of the 2012 championships. At the end of the regular season, the 6’6″ Plummer was the only player in the conference to be ranked in the top five in both scoring (fourth) and rebounding (fifth). He produced one of the most prolific sophomore seasons in UMBC’s 26-year NCAA Division I history, scoring 446 points, one shy of the all-time record for a sophomore, set by Peter Mulligan in the 2001-02 campaign.

Liam Paddock ’13 Named 2011 America East Fall Scholar-Athlete

UMBC junior fullback Liam Paddock has been named the 2011 America East Fall Scholar-Athlete for the sport of men’s soccer. Paddock was amongst six recipients in the league’s fall sports of men’s and women’s soccer, volleyball, field hockey and men’s and women’s cross country. He is the first Retriever soccer player to receive the honor.

Student-Athletes Post Record-Setting Semester in the Classroom

UMBC’s student-athletes posted a record-setting semester in the classroom in the fall of 2011. Sixty-two percent (209) of Retriever student-athletes recorded grade-point averages of 3.00 or better, which is the highest figure since these statistics have been reported. Liam Paddock ’13, Vince Savarese ’12 and Andy Streilein ’12 Named to NSCAA Men’s Scholar All-East Region Team

UMBC junior Liam Paddock and seniors Vince Savarese and Andy Streilein were named to the National Soccer Coaches Association of American 2011 University Division Men’s Scholar All-East Region team. Paddock earned second team All-East honors, while Savarese and Streilein were tabbed as Honorable Mention. Jay Greene Returns to UMBC Basketball, Joins Staff as Assistant Coach

Jay Greene, one of the most successful and popular players in UMBC basketball history, has returned to his alma mater as an assistant men’s basketball coach, Head Coach Randy Monroe announced today. Greene replaces another UMBC alum, John Zito ’06 who has entered private business after three years on the staff. “I’m really excited to have Jason be back and be a part of our staff,” Monroe said. “He is going to bring a tremendous amount of basketball knowledge to our staff, but above all, he has the ability to relate to the student-athletes at UMBC.”

Jordan Becker ’15 Named America East Men’s Soccer Rookie of the Week

UMBC freshman forward Jordan Becker was named America East Conference Men’s Soccer Rookie of the Week for games ending August 28. Becker scored the lone goal as the Retrievers edged visiting Mount St. Mary’s, 1-0, in the opening game for both teams. The contest was played in steady rain on Saturday, August 27, as the Baltimore area felt the first effects of Hurricane Irene. Read more on umbcretrievers.com.

UMBC Men’s Soccer Receives Votes In Two Preseason Polls

The UMBC men’s soccer team has garnered votes in two national preseason soccer rankings and has been tabbed as the second choice amongst America East Conference coaches in the league’s preseason poll. UMBC was the only America East squad to earn votes in the NSCAA Division I national rankings and College Soccer News’ 2011 Pre-Season Top 30 poll. The NSCAA rankings included 25 teams, plus 14 teams which received votes, while CSN’s poll included 12 squads receiving votes. UMBC men’s basketball brings home an ESPY for “Best Moment” in sports

Fan votes have been tallied and the results are in: UMBC men’s basketball brought the nation the “Best Moment” in sports this year.
