Onischuk '07, MLL, Named Director of Texas Tech Chess Program

Alex Onischuk ’07, modern languages and linguistics, was named the director of Texas Tech University’s chess program on July 30th, according to an article in The Lubbock Avalanche-Journal. The Ukraine-born grandmaster was captain of UMBC’s chess team during a period in which the team won four consecutive national championships, from 2002 to 2006. Texas Tech’s team are also champions, winning the President’s Cup for the second consecutive year this year. Yap '08, BioSci, Wins Predoctoral Fellowship

Alumnus Jeremy Yap ’08, biological sciences, was recently honored as one of four national winners of a 2012-2013 American Chemical Society (ACS) Medicinal Chemistry Predoctoral Fellowship. Yap is currently attending the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy, where his work “focuses on the design and synthesis of small-molecule inhibitors (drugs) of oncogenic protein–protein interactions,” according to University of Maryland news. Borel '02, INDS, to Compete in Her Third Olympics

Former UMBC track and field standout and NCAA champion Cleopatra Borel ’02, INDS, is competing in her third Olympic Games for her native Trinidad and Tobago, once again in the shot put. President Obama Appoints UMBC President as Chair of National Education Commission

To UMBC’s alumni: I am delighted to share the news that Freeman Hrabowski has been appointed by President Obama to chair the newly created President’s Advisory Commission on Educational Excellence for African Americans. The announcement was made by the White House Thursday afternoon. The Commission will advise President Obama and Education Secretary Arne Duncan and will work closely with the newly formed White House Initiative on Educational Excellence for African Americans.  The Commission will also lead a national dialogue – engaging the business, philanthropic, nonprofit, and education communities – on African American achievement from early childhood through adulthood. Panunto '12, M.S. GES, Wins Poster Competition

Alumnus Matthew Panunto ’12, M.S. geography and environmental systems (GES), has won the 2012 American Water Resources Association (AWRA) National Conference Student Poster Competition for his submission “Effects of valley segment sequencing on floodplain hydroperiods.” According to the abstract, Panunto and co-authors Philippe Vidon, Pierre-André Jacinthe, and GES professor Matthew Baker’s piece used “numerical simulations of… hypothetical hydraulic constraints and empirical characterizations of valley segments and flood hydrographs in central Indiana’s White River valley” in order to understand more about the impact of “valley sequencing” on floodplain hydroperiods, or when a region is waterlogged. Recent UMBC Ph.D. alumnus Sanjit Karmakar ’12, physics, has been featured in a  Baltimore Sun story focusing on his work in “ghost imaging,” the process by which a picture can be taken without actually “seeing” the object which is being photographed. The camera Karmakar designed, which Sun reporter Jonathan Pitts described as “look[ing] like a cross between an 1890s camera and a bulky steamer trunk,” utilizes the light of the sun as the source for images, which are generated on a computer using mathematics associated with quantum physics. Alumni To Play Chamber Concert at UMBC to Benefit Young Musicians

Five alumni will perform a chamber music concert at UMBC this month to benefit a Baltimore program that provides music lessons to inner-city youth. Archer-Smith '85, Psych, New Director of Local Meals on Wheels
