Homecoming 2018: Magic Retriever Moments

This year’s Homecoming brought Retrievers of all ages back to their alma mater. In many ways, Homecoming represented the very best of what UMBC has to offer, from reunions with lifelong friends spanning all of the university’s 52 years, to celebrations of the life of the mind, as well as plenty of fun on and off the field. Here are some highlights from this year’s Homecoming, held October 4-14, 2018. See the full collection of Homecoming 2018 photos here. 30th Anniversary of the Alumni Awards To celebrate 30 years of alumni excellence, UMBC greeted a packed concert hall full of… Continue Reading Homecoming 2018: Magic Retriever Moments

Bookstore Bob Leaves the Building

Rooted in the far corner, a leafy green plant has grown nearly across the office, curling around a large ticking clock, and hugging framed photographs a proud father has mounted on the wall. It keeps going, its stem and leaves circling the desktop monitor, dangling just beneath the ceiling. Below it sits its owner, “Bookstore Bob” Somers, mustachioed manager of the UMBC Bookstore. He brought a much smaller, nearly-dead version of the plant with him when the shop moved to The Commons from the University Center 16 years ago. “I thought I’d kill it right away,” he says, with his… Continue Reading Bookstore Bob Leaves the Building

New CoLab Program Brings Interdisciplinary Approach to Summer Research

In piles on a table in the chilly back room of UMBC’s Special Collections office lie a science fiction lover’s dream: decades-worth of fanzines in all their hand-drawn, mimeographed glory. Compiled by amateur editors, they span topics from space travel to colonization to 1970s feminism. Fittingly, the students poring over the zines as part of UMBC’s new month-long Interdisciplinary CoLab research program are just as different as the titles they explore. One studies biochemistry, another computer science. The third has interests in communications and gender and women’s studies, and was thrilled to find connections in the sci-fi zine Janus. As… Continue Reading New CoLab Program Brings Interdisciplinary Approach to Summer Research
