UMBC’s student innovation competition winners share tips for aspiring entrepreneurs

Student teams recently gathered at Betamore, a Baltimore-based entrepreneurship and coworking space, to battle in the final round of UMBC’s annual Cangialosi Business Innovation Competition. This year’s competition included two distinct tracks: technology and innovation, and social impact. The top three ideas in each track received funding to help move their ventures forward.

Students focus on mental health and the environment in 2020 UMBC Idea Competition

Six student groups recently vied for the top prize in UMBC’s annual Idea Competition, presenting to a panel of alumni judges their innovative solutions to everyday challenges. The competition, hosted by UMBC’s Alex. Brown Center for Entrepreneurship, was held virtually for the first time due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This year’s winning ideas focused on physical and mental health and the environment.

UMBC’s Mustafa Al-Adhami wins national Three-Minute Thesis competition

Al-Adhami earned first place in two qualifying rounds of the competition, on his path to claiming the national title. In Nashville, Al-Adhami and nine other finalists presented their three-minute talks in front of a live audience that selected the ultimate winner.

In 2019 Idea Competition, UMBC students focus on inclusion

Leading up to UMBC’s Idea Competition, participants spend hours refining their presentations and receiving feedback from their mentors, as well as faculty, staff, family, and friends. Their goal: to gain the funding and professional advice needed to make their ideas a reality. 

UMBC celebrates opening of student venture OCA Mocha, “where coffee meets community”

Two years ago, local business and community groups asked a UMBC entrepreneurship class for ideas on how to better connect the University and its surrounding communities. The idea for OCA Mocha was born. After more than two years of planning, construction, relationship-building, and first-hand experience with the ups and downs of starting a business from scratch, the coffee shop and community gathering space in downtown Arbutus has officially opened its doors.

Pitch perfect: 2019 Cangialosi Business Innovation Competition standouts

UMBC’s annual Cangialosi Business Innovation Competition is a Shark Tank-style event for students who are serious about starting companies to solve real challenges. Ahead of the competition, each team is paired an industry mentor who provides professional advice and learns about tools at UMBC that can support their business ideas.
