A Lifetime of Giving Comes Full Circle

When she began her college search, the Honorable Wanda Keyes Heard ‘79, political science, knew very little about UMBC. But when she and her family — then living in Long Island, New York — returned from a visit to schools in the DC area, they decided to stop by the new university in Catonsville. That chance decision would change Wanda’s life. “I fell in love with UMBC,” she says. That means a lot coming from Wanda, whose father Sterling Keyes, was a veteran educator and civil rights activist who impressed upon her from an early age the importance of education.… Continue Reading A Lifetime of Giving Comes Full Circle

UMBC Stands Out in the Crowd

Stroll near The Commons on most weekdays and you’ll see tables piled high with tasty baked goods. The students at these tables are asking for help – spare change, really – to fund their clubs’ latest and greatest pursuits in a way that hasn’t changed much since the university opened in 1966. But now these passionate student appeals are getting a boost from the power of the people . . . and the internet. UMBC recently unveiled a new crowdfunding website that allows students to harness their personal relationships to bring in support for their own projects on campus. The… Continue Reading UMBC Stands Out in the Crowd

A Day in the Life of a UMBC Student

Since UMBC opened its doors in September of 1966, a lot has changed. Thanks to donors like you, this place has grown and expanded in unbelievable ways. But one thing that hasn’t changed is the focus on a well-rounded college experience. From sunrise to sunset, UMBC hums with activity. Students shift from class, research and creative endeavors to sporting events, festivals and concerts. They work together everyday to build a vibrant and dynamic campus community. Just like there is no typical day at UMBC, there is no typical UMBC student. So we thought you might enjoy the chance to catch… Continue Reading A Day in the Life of a UMBC Student

A Bench of His Own

There’s a bench just outside UMBC’s Public Policy building. It’s a quiet, unassuming bench. But if you take a moment to read its engraved plaque, you’ll see there’s a story behind that bench — a story about a man named Jim Kruger. Jim is a 2013 graduate of UMBC, but in many ways, he’s very different from his classmates. For starters, Jim’s a grandfather. He came to UMBC through Maryland’s Golden ID program, which helps people over 60 return to school to earn or complete a degree. When he graduated from high school, Jim went straight to the Community College… Continue Reading A Bench of His Own

Why I Give to UMBC: Professor Bimal Sinha

Every so often, we like to ask our donors why they chose to support UMBC, and what makes their connection the University special. Recently, we spoke with Professor Bimal Sinha, who founded the statistics graduate program at UMBC. Dr. Sinha also created an endowment fund for both undergraduate and graduate statistics students entitled the Dr. Bimal and Mrs. Suchandra Sinha Endowment for Excellence in Statistics.

A Big UMBC Thank You – FY13 Donor Roll

Every year, as fall begins to roll in, and the leaves start turning brilliant colors all across campus, we’re reminded that Thanksgiving is just around the corner. Fortunately for us, we don’t have to wait for November to get that warm gracious feeling (although the pie, alas, will have to wait). Today, we’re releasing the FY13 Donor Roll, a list of all of the wonderful people who supported UMBC during the last fiscal year. This list is full of Retriever Believers. Thank you for all you do to keep UMBC strong!

Dr. Freeman Hrabowski hosted the third annual 1966 Society dinner on September 19 in the Imaging Research Center (IRC) at UMBC.  The 1966 Society (link to planned giving page) celebrates those individual members who have identified the UMBC Foundation in their estate plans. Guests had a wonderful time exploring the IRC during the evening. During dinner, Dan Bailey, Director of the Imaging Research Center, welcomed the group and showcased some of the exciting research being worked on in the Center.  Check out the new IRC documentary, The Work of the Imaging Research Center http://www.irc.umbc.edu/blog/. UMBC honored and thanked George and Betsy Sherman for their commitment to education and their generous support of the University at the dedication of Sherman Hall, formerly Academic IV, on Thursday, September 19. Over nearly 20 years, the Shermans have committed more than $10 million to help strengthen our efforts to increase the number of well-prepared, highly qualified teachers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) committed to teaching in high-needs schools in the Greater Baltimore area. Their support enabled UMBC to launch the Sherman STEM Teacher Scholars Program in 2006.
