Hilltop Society Meets, Greets in New Theatre

Members of UMBC’s Hilltop Society gathered this month in the Black Box Theatre of the new Performing Arts and Humanities Building to celebrate their commitment to UMBC. Established in 2012, The Hilltop Society recognizes the many friends, corporations, and foundations who contribute $1,000 or more annually to UMBC. Members of The Hilltop Society have chosen to make UMBC one of their philanthropic priorities, and we are grateful for this show of support. These donors are critical to the success of the University, creating unique educational opportunities for our students and enhancing UMBC’s reputation as a research institution. Thank you to… Continue Reading Hilltop Society Meets, Greets in New Theatre

Announcing the John Jeffries International Fellowship

Dean John Jeffries is retiring at the end of June after forty years of service to UMBC. In recognition of his profound impact on UMBC, we are delighted to announce the establishment of the John Jeffries International Fellowship. The Fellowship fund honors John’s commitment to building a strong and distinctive undergraduate curriculum and to educating students to become informed and engaged global citizens.  The Fellowship will provide faculty with resources to create, or redesign, and teach a course in their fields in order to add or enhance an explicit international or transnational focus. Our expectation is that the resulting courses… Continue Reading Announcing the John Jeffries International Fellowship

A Tradition of Giving From UMBC’s Earliest Years

UMBC is a community that gives. Nearly each day in the breezeway next to The Commons, one might stroll by multiple tables occupied by students raising money for this charity or that. Our faculty and staff give annually in support of UMBC and organizations supported through the Maryland Charities Campaign. And, of course, alumni dedication to UMBC spans decades — starting with the first graduating class, in fact. In a guest post on UMBC’s Breaking Ground blog, UMBC archivist Lindsey Loeper ’04, American studies, recently uncovered evidence of a truly momentous philanthropic action made by the Class of 1970: The… Continue Reading A Tradition of Giving From UMBC’s Earliest Years

Alumni Donations Help Student Job Searchers “Clothes The Deal”

Students kicked off Career Week 2013 a bit more “dressed to impress” than normal this year thanks to alumni, staff and faculty donations to “Clothes The Deal,” a program through which students improved their career wardrobes (for free!) and better prepared themselves for future job searches. See the full Career Week schedule here. Several dozen students waited in line outside UMBC’s Women’s Center Thursday morning for the first crack at hundreds of pieces of donated business attire: skirts, blazers, ties, and suits. By the end of the event Friday afternoon, 362 students had taken at least one piece of clothing,… Continue Reading Alumni Donations Help Student Job Searchers “Clothes The Deal”

Peaceworker Grads Give Back

Making a positive mark on society is part of the lifelong drive for graduates of UMBC’s Shriver Peaceworker Fellows Program — so when we found out that the program’s 2011 cohort made (and fulfilled) a pledge for 100% giving to UMBC, we were obviously excited, but not a bit surprised! Program director Joby Taylor ’05, Ph.D., LLC, shared news recently that the six members of the Class of 2011 achieved their participation goal, donating $650 to support the purchase of “books and resources for both the Fall and Spring Pracs this year for all 14 of our current Fellows!” This… Continue Reading Peaceworker Grads Give Back

SLIDESHOW: 2013 Scholarship Luncheon

Thank you to all of the wonderful donors and scholarship students who came out for last week’s 2nd annual Scholarship Luncheon, March 13. Often, this event marks the first meeting of donors and their scholars, making it a truly memorable occasion for all. The event drew more than 100 guests, and featured remarks by McCormick & Company President Alan D. Wilson and senior Nia N. Hampton ’14, media and communications studies, who is the recipient of a number of scholarships at UMBC, along with UMBC President Freeman A. Hrabowski, III. We’ll be sharing stories of connections made at the luncheon… Continue Reading SLIDESHOW: 2013 Scholarship Luncheon

Hrabowski at TED: Set High Expectations for Students

It’s all too easy to take successes for granted, especially when you see them every day around campus. At UMBC, the concept of pushing students of all backgrounds and academic levels to succeed is such a part of campus culture, we sometimes forget that’s not necessarily standard practice at other schools. So when UMBC President Dr. Freeman Hrabowski, III, challenged audiences at the TED2013 conference in California last month to set higher expectations for all students at all levels of education, we were delighted — but not at all surprised. During his session — which fell within a grouping of… Continue Reading Hrabowski at TED: Set High Expectations for Students
