Katrin Patterson ’11, a double major in anthropology and gender and women’s studies, was featured this month on the Volunteer Maryland website for her role with Ardmore Enterprises, through which she will launch a volunteer program that will bring more awareness to the capabilities of individuals with intellectual or developmental disabilities Read the Volunteer Maryland story here. Del. Cardin ’96, MPP, Exploring Potential AG Run

Maryland State Delegate Jon Cardin ’96, MPP, has formed an exploratory committee for a potential run for Maryland attorney general in 2014, according to an AP article published in the Daily Record. Cardin, who is the nephew of the recently re-elected U.S. Senator Ben Cardin, is currently serving his third term as delegate for Baltimore County. Just Another (Jury Duty) Day for “Ace of Cakes” Goldman ’97

“Ace of Cakes” star baker Jeffrey “Duff” Goldman ’97, history, was spotted blending into the crowd for Baltimore city jury duty today, the Baltimore Sun reported. Although, from the sound of it, he was a bit upstaged by fellow Baltimore star Olympian Michael Phelps. Read the Baltimore Sun story here. Goldman, who was named a UMBC Outstanding Alumnus of the Year in the Humanities in 2009, spent at least part of his day of civic duty tweeting about hot dog water, the Sun story said.

Passing of Emeritus Instructor Bill Hathaway, EHS

Walz, Chair, Department of Emergency Health Services It is with sadness that I report the passing of Emeritus Instructor William “Bill” Hathaway on November 1st after a battle with lung cancer. Know by his students as “Uncle Bill,” professor Hathaway served as the department’s undergraduate management track coordinator. He taught at UMBC from 1981 till his retirement in 1999. Greek Alums Celebrate 25th Anniversary

Alumni representing a multiple Greek organizations gathered last month during Homecoming to celebrate the 25th anniversary of UMBC’s chapter of Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity. Nearly 100 SAE alumni and active members attended the event at the Sheraton in Columbia on October 13, said Jim Lotfi ’89, visual and performing arts, who advises the student fraternity. Remembering Scott Hannon ’86, ’90 MS Phys

Scott remained at UMBC for 22 years as a Research Assistant in the Physics Department/Joint Center for Earth Systems Technology. Memorial Planned Friday for Soltesz ’72, Early SGA President

William R. Soltesz ’72, financial economics and mathematics, one of UMBC’s early Student Government Association presidents, passed away on September 13 at his home in New Jersey. He was 62 years old. Soltesz, who grew up in Catonsville, served as president of the SGA from 1970 to 1971, and “was pivotal in working with faculty and students to keep the university open during a time when many other fledgling universities closed due to student riots and political pressures related to the Vietnam War,” his obituary reports. Grigoryan ’02, CompSci/BioChem, Teaching at Dartmouth

A Computational Biologist and Dartmouth professor, Alumnus Gevorg Grigoryan says his undergraduate research at UMBC was crucial to his success. Kids typically see college as a chance to get away from their parents. That wasn’t the case with alumnus Gevorg Grigoryan ’02, Computer Science and Biochemistry, who did research with his dad in UMBC’s Computational Photonics Lab as an undergraduate. In 2000, the pair co-authored a paper proposing a new visualization technique for wave transmissions that uses color to represent amplitude and phase information. Clark ’06, Psych, Added to Orioles Roster

Former UMBC baseball standout Zach Clark ’06, psychology, has been added to the Baltimore Orioles’ roster, the Baltimore Sun reported yesterday. Clark, who pitched and was a designated hitter for the Retrievers, has spent seven years in the Orioles farm system, most recently with the Bowie Baysox. Read the Baltimore Sun story here. The U.S. State Department counts Arabic as flat out one of the most difficult languages to learn. For Loren Siebert ’93, computer science, however, the study of a language that started as a hobby has blossomed into a career that blends both tech and teaching skills.
