Leaving a Legacy: George Vitak '73, BioSci

“There are not that many of me left,” George Vitak, ’73, biological sciences, says jovially as we walk together from the Library Pond back to his office in the University Center on a blustery late November day. The “me” in this case is a select group of faculty and staff who have witnessed UMBC’s rise to national prominence almost in its entirety. And at least as far as the University System of Maryland payroll is concerned, today is the day that another “me” bids UMBC farewell. On December 1, Vitak retired from his position as director of campus card and… Continue Reading Leaving a Legacy: George Vitak '73, BioSci

Your Support Vital for Higher Education Budget

March 15, 2012 TO:  The UMBC Community FR:  Freeman Hrabowski, President and Philip Rous, Provost RE:   Your Support Vital for Higher Education Budget As the Maryland General Assembly works to address a $1-billion State budget gap, legislators are considering a number of budget plans that would reduce Governor O’Malley’s proposed budget for the University System of Maryland (USM) and negatively impact USM campuses.  Budget cuts currently proposed for the System range from $5.3 million to nearly $20 million. It is vital that faculty, staff, students, and alumni take time to urge legislators to continue the strong support they have shown… Continue Reading Your Support Vital for Higher Education Budget

Picture Perfect: Monica Gallagher '01, Visual Arts

When asked to chronicle her life since college, illustrator Monica Gallagher did so in the way that meant most to her: in comic book form. Check out her essay from the Winter 2012 issue of UMBC Magazine:   A designer, illustrator and comicker living in Baltimore, Gallagher graduated magna cum laude from UMBC in 2001 with a degree in visual arts, emphasis on animation. While at UMBC she learned Japanese, traveled to Greece with the ancient studies department, fainted in a yoga class, participated in film festivals, worked in the photo cage, stayed up way too late in the computer… Continue Reading Picture Perfect: Monica Gallagher '01, Visual Arts

Blow Up: 1969 Battle Over UMBC’s First Literary Magazine

How the 1969 battle over UMBC’s literary magazine kicked off an era of discontent at the university. “Literary Magazine to Determine True University Status of UMBC” The headline in the February 10, 1969 edition of The Retriever seems a bit grandiose, as do the brash pronouncements of its editor, quoted in the article: The staff of the magazine anticipates a lot of excitement on its debut. Editor Michael Jacobs stated in an interview that “the response to this magazine will be a kind of gauge on how far UMBC has approached being a true university.” By Richard Byrne ’86 As… Continue Reading Blow Up: 1969 Battle Over UMBC’s First Literary Magazine

Scholarship Profile: Atom Zerfas '13

Junior Atom Zerfas is the quintessential UMBC scholarship student: overwhelmingly outgoing and incredibly involved. A double major in psychology and math, Zerfas is no slouch where academics are concerned — but he feels just as much at home on the playing field. Zerfas came to UMBC following his graduation from Pikesville High School in 2009. Immediately he jumped into the UMBC culture, joining the Student Events Board and Ultimate Frisbee team. In just two years, he became the Ultimate Frisbee president. “Don’t get me wrong, I’m just the president, I’m not the captain,” he explained modestly. Atom knew one thing… Continue Reading Scholarship Profile: Atom Zerfas '13

We Are Inspired: The Late Professor Alice Robinson

There are so many ways to leave a legacy. By all accounts, over her many years at UMBC, Dr. Alice Robinson, a founding professor in theatre, left legacies in the broadened hearts and minds of countless students here. After her passing, her legacy lives on through a scholarship fund aimed at the very students she taught. (Click on the photo at right to enlarge the full piece in UMBC Magazine.) We are inspired by the gifts Dr. Robinson gave to UMBC. What will your legacy be?
