Announcing the John Jeffries International Fellowship

Dean John Jeffries is retiring at the end of June after forty years of service to UMBC. In recognition of his profound impact on UMBC, we are delighted to announce the establishment of the John Jeffries International Fellowship. The Fellowship fund honors John’s commitment to building a strong and distinctive undergraduate curriculum and to educating students to become informed and engaged global citizens.  The Fellowship will provide faculty with resources to create, or redesign, and teach a course in their fields in order to add or enhance an explicit international or transnational focus. Alumna Play to Show at Alumna Theatre in June

Feeling the urge for a little theater with a Retriever twist? Mark your calendar for the June opening of Grieving for Genevieve, a play by Kathleen Warnock ’80, INDS. Not only does the show play at the alumna-owned Venus Theatre in Laurel, it stars Karen Costanzi ’92, theatre, as Genevieve. Venus artistic director Deborah Randall ’94, theatre, chose the play as part of the 2013 season for its thematic fit, but she’s also very excited to work with Warnock, whose plays she greatly admires. Jones ’06, SocWk, Receives 2013 Walter Sondheim Public Service Award

UMBC alumnus Joseph T. Jones ’06, social work, CEO of The Center for Urban Families, was honored last week by the Greater Baltimore Committee as the recipient of the 2013 Walter Sondheim Public Service Award for his work connecting low-income men and women to job and family support. Pitcher Clark ’06, Psych, Picked Up By Orioles for Seattle Series

UMBC alumnus Zach Clark ’06, psychology, has been called up by the Baltimore Orioles to join the team for their series with the Seattle Mariners at Safeco Field in Seattle, the organization announced on yesterday afternoon. A right-handed pitcher, Clark becomes the third Retriever to make a Major League squad, following in the footsteps of former UMBC students Jay Witasick and Wayne Franklin who combined to throw in the majors for 19 seasons. Haines ’12, VisArts, to Show Paintings at Catonsville Gallery

Alumna Kimberly Haines ’12, visual arts, will display a collection of paintings centered around the theme “New Skies” at the David Mikow Art Gallery in Catonsville starting later this week. An opening reception will be held at the gallery on Friday, May 3, from 5 to 7 p.m. “New Skies, is full of new planets and surreal landscape paintings created with a variety of different mediums including watercolor, spray paint and acrylics,” said Haines, who was part of the gallery’s inaugural show with four other UMBC alumnae last fall. The Chapter of Black and Latino Alumni and the Office of Student Life’s Mosaic: Center for Culture and Diversity hosted the Black and Latino Senior Reception yesterday to celebrate the achievements of the Class of 2013.
