Why Major in Global Studies?

Develop global competence through interdisciplinary coursework, foreign language, and study abroad

As a global studies major, you will learn to engage effectively and critically with global issues and their implications for communities, governments, businesses, and nonprofit organizations. You will acquire theoretical and historical knowledge about globalization, learn how to behave and communicate appropriately across cultures, gain research skills to investigate social, economic, and cultural issues from a global perspective, develop the capacity to combine multiple disciplines to solve problems of global significance, and cultivate an ethics of global citizenship. Small classes and active learning are hallmarks of this major.

What Are My Career Options Studying Global Studies?

A degree in Global Studies can prepare you for work in a broad variety of areas, including economic development, environmental sustainability, law, policy and governance, and public history, among many others.

UMBC Global Studies alumni have worked for federal agencies such as the U.S. Department of State, international development organizations like the Pan American Development Foundation, transnational corporations like Goldman Sachs, and NGOs like the International Rescue Committee.
