Why Major in American Studies?

The Department of American Studies provides students with the skills to critically analyze issues of place, identity, and community through a comparative and transnational lens.

UMBC’s American studies program offers you a chance to analyze dynamic issues of race, ethnicity, class, and gender in American culture that impact our contemporary world. Through a major in American studies, you’ll learn about local and global communities, place-based research, explore America’s relationship with other countries, and study representations of America in entertainment and pop culture. You’ll graduate with a strong set of critical analysis skills that will prepare you for a rewarding career in law, journalism, teaching, museums, non-profit organizations, education, and public policy.

How Will You Gain Experience?

Applied Experience (3 Credits)

Includes internships, service learning, undergraduate research, student teacher praxis, and AMST courses designed as applied research. Students in dual programs may fulfill this requirement by taking an approved applied experience course in the second department. Coursework applied to this requirement may use pass/fail or regular grading.
