The intimate Black Box Theatre seats approximately 100 (with modular seating arrangements), and is home to UMBC Theatre productions as well as special events. The Black Box Theatre is ADA accessible.

 

Plan Your Visit

The Black Box Theatre is located in UMBC’s Performing Arts and Humanities Building, and is located about 15 minutes from Baltimore’s Inner Harbor and about 25 minutes from the Washington Beltway (I-495). The building’s exterior is easily recognized by its shiny stainless steel façade with a distinctive “thumbprint,” and the entrance to the theatre is near the “arches” that are visible from the parking area.

 

Directions
• From I-95 between Baltimore and Washington, take Exit 47B and follow signs to Catonsville and UMBC. At the second traffic circle, go 3/4 the way around to join the inner loop of Hilltop Circle. At the first traffic light, turn right onto Hilltop Road (with the PAHB on your right), and then an immediate left into Parking Lot 8.

 

• From I-695, take Exit 12C, Wilkens Avenue west, and at the first traffic circle go 3/4 the way around to turn onto Hilltop Road. At the traffic light, go straight through Hilltop Circle, and then take an immediate left into Parking Lot 8.

 

• If you use Apple Maps, search for UMBC Parking Lot 8A. If you’re using Google Maps, search for UMBC Lot 8. [Note: Apple Maps may say Lot 8 is closed, but it’s not!]

 

Parking
Free evening and weekend parking is available in Lot 8, adjacent to the Performing Arts and Humanities Building.

Green Theatre Revolution

Black Box Theatre

UMBC Theatre presents Green Theatre Revolution, directed by Susan McCully and Katie Hileman, a festival of new plays and devised works about climate justice. Performances include the staging of a play by guest playwright Nayantara Nayar, together with short works by student creators. Panels on Sustainable Stage Design, Writing for Climate Justice, and Climate Science Storytelling will accompany the production. A special performance of student works will take place at the Institute of Marine and Environmental Technology (IMET) in downtown Baltimore.
