Tales of Grit & Greatness

At Homecoming 2015, more than 300 members of the UMBC community (with alumni in the majority) gathered to kick off a more-than-year-long commemoration of the university’s 50th anniversary with an event that focused on alumni pride and volunteerism. The gathering brought together committed UMBC alumni volunteers and donors to inaugurate an effort to connect almost 70,000 graduates to the celebration of UMBC’s 50 distinctive years as a public research university. UMBC celebrates launch of campaign to reconnect with 70,000 global alumni ahead of 50th

Can hundreds of committed UMBC alumni, students, faculty and staff spread the word about our exceptional public research university and its 50th anniversary to almost 70,000 alumni and the rest of the world? The first wave of those “hundreds” – including more than 200 alumni – gathered at Homecoming 2015 in a tent on UMBC’s new campus entrance to kick off a year-long effort to do just that. 50 Years of Grit & Greatness

A message from our President and Provost: The UMBC community’s journey started when the University welcomed its first students on September 19, 1966. We are delighted now to provide a preview of exciting plans to celebrate our 50th anniversary. Our celebration will honor many facets of the UMBC experience and span the period between October 2015 and May 2017. At the beginning of each school year, UMBC’s New Student Book Experience (NSBE) invites all UMBC freshmen and new transfer students to read a selected book and engage in formal and informal discussion about it.
