With the Iowa Caucuses just days away, UMBC faculty have been in the news weighing in on the current state of the presidential race. Kimberly Moffitt, an associate professor of American studies, was a guest on the Baltimore Sun podcast “Roughly Speaking with Dan Rodricks” to discuss the recent Republican presidential debate on Fox Business Network. Tyson King-Meadows appointed associate dean of College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences

Tyson King-Meadows, chair of Africana studies and associate professor of political science, has been appointed associate dean of UMBC’s College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences (CAHSS), beginning in summer 2016. King-Meadows joined UMBC in 2003 and has held numerous leadership positions across campus. He’s an affiliate faculty member of the School of Public Policy and the Maryland Institute for Policy Analysis and Research. Following John Boehner’s retirement announcement on September 25, Thomas Schaller, professor and chair of political science, wrote that the House Speaker’s time in office will be more defined by the political environment he inherited than some of the decisions he made while in office. William Blake, a new assistant professor in the political science department, was quoted in a recent New York Times article about a study he conducted with two colleagues that investigated why the Supreme Court grants a smaller percentage of cases during the first conference of its term compared to others throughout the year. The research points to new law clerks as the reason because they receive limited training and are reluctant to provide recommendations due to reputation concerns.
