Why Study Statistics?

The PhD in Statistics program provides the flexible training to tailor their program to align with their specific career objectives. The program can focus on theoretical, applied or computational aspects of statistics.

UMBC’s Ph.D. in Statistics provides training in theory and applications of statistics that prepare students for employment in academia, industry or government agencies. Candidates emphasizing statistical theory will be well prepared for academic careers in research and teaching.

Those focusing on applied or computational statistics can pursue careers in industry or government agencies such as the FDA, Census Bureau, etc. Particular areas of specialty include machine learning, Bayesian analysis, biostatistics and causal inference, experimental design, environmental statistics, spatial statistics and image analysis, probability theory, survival analysis, and time series analysis.

Review Doctor of Philosophy in Statistics Requirements

GRE General Test score in 85 percentile in quantitative section required

TOEFL score of >600 (paper), >250 (computer), or >100 (iBT) for international students whose native language is not English; solid background in mathematics and/or statistics
