Sherman Scholars Program
Extend beyond with a community of learners just like you–students committed to equity and social justice.
About Our Program
The Sherman Scholars Program supports and prepares culturally responsive, compassionate educators to teach in Baltimore City or similar schools and districts. Through cohort based student success initiatives and school-based partnerships, the program facilitates authentic learning experiences for scholars while promoting student achievement and engagement. The program provides academic and professional coaching to help scholars obtain teaching licensure through an undergraduate certificate or a Masters’ degree in education.
You’re invited to join the Sherman Scholars, where you will:
- Learn from experienced mentors about teaching in historically underserved, urban schools and communities
- Gain experience working with children of all ages
- Enrich education by connecting classroom learning with the real-life experiences of students and communities
- Receive a scholarship providing financial support tailored to your academic plan.

Sherman Scholars Application Deadlines
The deadlines above are for application and admission to this scholars program only.
We strongly recommend submitting your application to UMBC by the Early Action or Priority deadline.
Some of the most influential people during my time at UMBC have been the mentors and leaders of the Sherman Program. With their willingness to help and kind affirmations, I have felt so supported and encouraged to continue on my journey to be a teacher.
