Chess Week! Join us in The Commons as we celebrate Chess Week 2008, a week's worth of events, activities, and giveaways leading up to the 2008 President's Cup, Final Four of Chess on April 5th & 6th. Events include an opening kickoff on Monday, March 31 with FREE t-shirts to the first 50 students who attend, a giant chess match between some of UMBC's finest chess team members, and much, much more. ChessFest 2007 Last Sunday, October 14, UMBC held ChessFest event. Four UMBC Chess Fellows Sergey Erenburg, Pawel Blehm, Katerina Rohonyan and Bruci Lopez provided chess instructions to over a hundred of children from different schools of Maryland, Virginia and DC. The director of International School of Chess Dr.Korenman conducted a lecture for chess coaches. After the lectures, the public had an opportunity to enjoy a simultaneous matches against Sergey Erenburg and Katerina Rohonyan, followed by two exhibition matches. 2007 UMBC Chess Championship The 2007 UMBC Chess Championship was won for the third consecutive time by GM Pawel Blehm, with a score of 4.5/5.0. He only conceded a draw to FM Tegshsuren Enkhbat, a teammate on the Baltimore Kingfishers in the US Chess League. Freshman Aaron Kahn scored an impressive 4.0/5.0 to tie for 2nd place with Enkhbat and Daniel Yeager, Pennsylvania's top junior player. The U1800 Section was jointly won by Carl Hudec and David Hevey, while Sophomore Alisha Crowley was the top UMBC student in the section. Freshman Helong Li won top honors in the Beginner's Section.
