The UMBC mathematics and statistics program is designed to give students a broad perspective on various fields of mathematics, especially areas closely associated with applications, such as mathematical modeling, differential equations, numerical algorithms, and statistical analysis. UMBC mathematics and statistics students have access to the state-of-the-art computing facilities and will often use them in their courses. UMBC students have used a degree in mathematics or statistics as a launching pad for a wide variety of careers ranging from information technology to pursuing a law degree. Mathematics and statistics majors are in great demand in the increasingly interdisciplinary world.
