The Livewire 15: Blazing Trails new music festival presents RUCKUS, the faculty ensemble in residence at UMBC, in a concert of works by Zosha Di Castri, Sofia Gubaidulina, Tania León, George Lewis, and Joan Tower.
For the second evening of the Livewire 15 new music festival, the RUCKUS ensemble is joined by UMBC affiliate faculty to present Julius Eastman’s concert-length work, Femenine.
How often do you get a chance to eat a work of art? RUCKUS presents a lunchtime performance of Alison Knowles’s groundbreaking Fluxus work, Proposition #2: Make a Salad. In a radical turn away from the conventions of classical music, Knowles frames the concert experience around a simple, everyday act. The performers will trade their instruments for whisks, knives, and colanders, and every audience member will be served.
With characteristic elan and virtuosity, Ensemble Bravura and conductor Philip Mann present a multifaceted and eclectic Livewire 15 festival finale exploring human interconnection, with works by David Baker, Jennifer Higdon, Miroslav Skoryk, Karlheinz Stockhausen, and Joan Tower.

Join us for a special celebration of the centennial of the Harlem Renaissance from an interdisciplinary perspective focused on music, history, literature, and art. Moderated by Camee Maddox-Wingfield, Assistant Professor of Cultural Anthropology, a panel of UMBC faculty will explore the impact and legacy of this intellectual, social, and artistic movement. The UMBC Jazz Ensemble will perform music selections from the Harlem Renaissance.
Long before institutions turned their attention to LGBTQ+ archives, Queer individuals preserved, shared, and celebrated their own personal and community histories. Celebrating Archives month and LGBTQ+ History month, the Queer Artists + Archives Symposium brings together artists, archivists, and historians — as well as those working across disciplines — to reflect upon the evolving role of archives in preserving and sharing the stories and histories of Queer artists. Participants include Rahne Alexander, Alexander D'Agostino, Leslie Cozzi, Kate Drabinski, Ben Egerman, Hunter O'Hanian, Joseph Plaster, James Smalls, and SHAN Wallace.

The Department of Visual Arts hosts Rich Zim, who is about to celebrate 40 years of professional stop motion animation, for an artist talk and claymation workshop. His notable credits include Gumby, Pee-wee's Playhouse, The Nightmare Before Christmas, James and the Giant Peach, Coraline, and The SpongeBob Movie. He is currently the CEO and president of Zim animation, where he has been making psychedelic oozing dripping clay animation sequences in his own studio for projects such as Smiling friends, Rick and Morty, Middlemost Post and many other TV shows and movies.
UMBC Theatre presents Shakespeare in Harlem by Langston Hughes, adapted and directed by Gerrad Alex Taylor, a special co-production of UMBC Theatre, Chesapeake Shakespeare Company, and CSC's Black Classical Acting Ensemble. A rare gem from Langston Hughes, this collection of monologue poems revives the rhythms of jazz, the blues, and the pulse of the Harlem Renaissance—its love, struggles, and street-corner spirit. In director Gerrad Alex Taylor’s adaptation, Hughes’ words come alive in a dynamic full-length play, blending poetry, music, and dance for an immersive journey into the world he so vividly celebrated.
