Walt Weiskopf Quartet

The Department of Music presents the Walt Weiskopf Quartet, featuring Walt Weiskopf, saxophone, Harry Appelman, piano, Amy Shook, bass, and Steve Fidyk, drums. Their program will include music by Cole Porter, Wells & Segal, and original jazz works by Weiskopf.

Since launching his career with the Buddy Rich Big Band in 1981, saxophonist, composer, and author Walt Weiskopf has established himself as a prominent figure in jazz. He has built an impressive portfolio as both a leader and sideman, collaborating with renowned artists like Frank Sinatra, Steely Dan, and Michael McDonald while releasing numerous critically acclaimed recordings. Beyond his performance career, Weiskopf is highly respected for his seven books on jazz improvisation and his prolific output as a composer, creating works that showcase both technical prowess and accessibility.

Critics have consistently praised Weiskopf’s original compositions and arrangements, from his early success with Simplicity (1993) to Song for My Mother (1994), which received significant accolades. Throughout his career, reviewers have lauded his evolution from a promising talent to a major force in the industry, highlighting his powerful, unique perspective as a tenor saxophonist and arranger. His extensive body of work, including later albums like Open Road (2015) and Fountain of Youth (2017), reflects a mature artist with deep experience in both music and life.
