Tim Hall, Athletics, To Chair NCAA Committee on Women’s Athletics

UMBC Director of Athletics Tim Hall has been elected as the chairman of the NCAA Committee on Women’s Athletics for the fall of 2014, the committee announced last month at their meetings in Orlando, Fla. Hall, who has served on the 15-member, multi-divisional committee since 2011, replaces current CWA chair Marilyn Moniz-Kaho’ohanohano of the University of Hawaii. He had previously chaired the CWA/MOIC (Minority Opportunities and Interests Committee) Disability Subcommittee from 2012-14. Kim Berghaus ’14, Earns Second Career America East All-Academic Team Honor

UMBC senior tennis standout Kim Berghaus (Offenbach, Germany) was named to the 2014 America East Women’s Tennis All-Academic Team, the conference announced on May 23. Through the fall 2013 semester, Berghaus had posted a 3.84 grade-point average in physics and with minors in economics and mathematics. She earned President’s List honors by posting a 4.0 GPA during three of her first seven semesters as a Retriever. The co-captain of the 2014 squad received the athletic department’s Matt Skalsky Female Outstanding Scholar-Athlete Award, which goes to the highest-performing scholar-athlete. Men’s soccer ranked no. 7 in nation by NSCAA

The defending America East champion UMBC men’s soccer team opens its conference season this weekend ranked no. 7, nationally, according to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA). Over the past two weeks, UMBC has climbed nearly 20 spots. The latest rankings mark the first time in the team’s history to crack the top ten. On Saturday, the team will travel to Hartford to open defense of their 2012 America East crown. The Pete Caringi UMBC Soccer Show returns for another season on Thursday, Oct. 3, 2013. For the second consecutive week, UMBC senior forward Pete Caringi III (Perry Hall, Md./Calvert Hall) has earned the America East Conference Men’s Soccer Player of the Week award. Senior forward Pete Caringi III (Perry Hall, Md./Calvert Hall) started his season with a bang and netted national recognition from the NSCAA, the America East Conference, Top Drawer Soccer and College Soccer News. Four UMBC Alumni Invited to U.S. National Team Tryouts

Four UMBC alumni are among the 98 invitees for the 2014 Federation of International Lacrosse (FIL) World Championships, where the U.S. men seek to defend their title in Denver, Colorado on July 10-19, 2014. Attackmen Brendan Mundorf ’07, and Drew Westervelt ’07, will attempt to earn their second consecutive team selection. They were both members of the 2010 squad that won gold with a 12-10 victory over Canada in Manchester, England. UMBC Athletics Matches Best-Ever Finish With Third-Place Standing in America East Commissioner’s Cup Race

The UMBC athletic program matched its best-ever finish by placing third in the race for the America East Conference’s Stuart P. Haskell, Jr. Commissioner’s Cup. The Retrievers’ 19-sport program also finished third in 2007-08 and 2010-11 and bested last year’s fourth-place finish. Neller netted a heavily-contested 25-footer with 0.5 seconds to play to propel the Retrievers to a thrilling 68-67 victory over Maine at the RAC Arena on Sat., Feb. 2. Anthony Adams Named One of Nation’s Top Assistant Coaches by College Soccer News

For the sixth time since 2000, UMBC associate head men’s soccer coach Anthony Adams has been recognized by College Soccer News as one of the top assistant coaches in the nation. The web publication cited Adams among 15 assistant or associate head coaches at the NCAA Division I level. He earned his fifth accolade after the 2010 season, and in 2003, he was one of 27 college coaches in the nation (all sports) to be honored as an Assistant Coach of the Year by AFLAC.
