Why Study Pre-Nursing?

Get on track to become a nurse and be an important part of a patient’s care team in a growing field.

Nurses are an integral part of a healthcare team and are generally responsible for the planning, implementation, and evaluation of a patient’s health plan. Nurses also provide health promotion, counseling, and education to patients and their families. Pre-Nursing, as a pre-professional program, is a statement of intent on the student’s part, not an academic major. Students interested in pursuing a career in nursing can begin their studies at UMBC by following the Pre-Nursing curriculum, which consists of two years worth of prerequisites followed by two years in a nursing program at another institution. Alternatively, students can stay at UMBC to complete a bachelor’s degree in something other than nursing while also fulfilling prerequisites for Pre-Nursing and then be eligible to complete a second degree in nursing from another institution. UMBC has a collaborative partnership with the University of Maryland School of Nursing with pathways to earn a Bachelor of Science in Nursing or Master of Science in Nursing.
