Why Study Teaching?

The Master of Arts in Teaching program is a Council of the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP) and Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) approved graduate program for career changers and recent graduates with at least a bachelor’s degree seeking initial teaching certification.

You can complete the UMBC MAT Secondary Teacher Certification Program within 12 months at UMBC.  The UMBC Department of Education offers an opportunity for qualified graduate students interested in becoming secondary teachers to complete the MAT program within a calendar year by entering the program in the summer and devoting themselves to fulltime study for, at least, the following academic year.  Interested students must apply by April 15th to be eligible to enter the program the following summer.

Review Master of Arts in Teaching Requirements

Education (EDA)

For educators who already have teaching experience and hold a teaching certificate; designed to help experienced teachers prepare for roles in educational and curricular leadership, curriculum development, and in-service teacher professional development.

The STEM/Science concentration of MAE and Post-Bac Certificate Secondary STEM/Science are only accepting cohorts from school systems.

Please note that application decisions can take 6-8 weeks after the program’s deadline, and depend on how many applications a department receives. You will receive an email once the department processes your decision letter. You will be able to see your decision letter by logging in to the application website. Your decision letter will be where the application checklist was. You may also check your recommendation statuses to send reminders or update contact information from the user page. If you are having trouble logging back in, you can recover your account.
