UMBC Celebrates Present, Future During Fall Opening Meeting

At the Fall Opening Meeting on Thursday, August 22, President Freeman Hrabowski and Provost Philip Rous celebrated the present and future of UMBC. Dr. Patrice McDermott, Vice Provost for Faculty Affairs, named Senior Fellow at AAC&U

Dr. Patrice McDermott, Vice Provost for Faculty Affairs, has been named Senior Fellow at the Association of American Colleges and Universities (AAC&U) where she will partner with the STEM project, Project Kaleidoscope, on research initiatives designed to increase the number of women and women of color in academic STEM disciplines.

Joyce Tenney elected President of NASIG

UMBC Library Associate Director, Joyce Tenney, was elected President of the North American Serials Interest Group, Inc. (NASIG) for the 2013/2014 term. NASIG is the premier professional organization focused on serial publications.  

Four UMBC Alumni Invited to U.S. National Team Tryouts

Four UMBC alumni are among the 98 invitees for the 2014 Federation of International Lacrosse (FIL) World Championships, where the U.S. men seek to defend their title in Denver, Colorado on July 10-19, 2014. Attackmen Brendan Mundorf ’07, and Drew Westervelt ’07, will attempt to earn their second consecutive team selection. They were both members of the 2010 squad that won gold with a 12-10 victory over Canada in Manchester, England. Midfielders Terry Kimener ’08, and Peet Poillon ’10, are embarking on their first journeys to the championships. New campus smoking policy covered by Fox News

On Monday, July 8, Fox News visited the UMBC campus as part of a story on the new USM requirements that all state institutions become smoke free by July 1. Students interviewed for the story shared their thoughts on past rules for smoking and how the new policy will impact life on campus. “On one side you kind of want to have personal freedoms, but at the same time we’re at a public university that’s getting public money,” said a UMBC student. UMBC Alumni named to Daily Record’s ‘VIP’ and ’20 in Their Twenties’ lists

Erin O’Keefe ’08, MPP, has been named to the Daily Record’s VIP list, which honors leaders under 40 for their professional accomplishments and commitment to inspiring change in their communities. Erin is the director of the York Road Initiative at Loyola University. Greg Sileo ’11, MPP, was named to the Daily Record’s 20 Under Twenty list, which honors Maryland up-and-comers who are in their 20s. Greg is the Director of the Office of Home Energy Programs at the Maryland Department of Human Resources, and was formerly the Director of Community Outreach for the Mayor’s Office of Homeless Services. The UMBC Chess team was featured in the July, 2013 Washingtonian magazine. The article highlighted Washington, DC for, “We’re great at sports you didn’t even know existed.” The short piece focuses on the team’s history and how they are seeking to reclaim their once former dominance in college chess. Stephen Freeland selected as new director of Interdisciplinary Studies

Interdisciplinary Studies (INDS) is pleased to welcome Dr. Stephen Freeland as its new Director. Dr. Freeland succeeds Patricia La Noue, praised for building a solid foundation during her time in the position. In his new role, Dr. Freeland will extend the strengths of INDS. He has particular interests in the interface of science and religion and in using the full spectrum of creative arts to visualize and communicate social science, natural science and engineering. UMBC Earns Accolades in Ranking Reports

UMBC recently earned accolades in three college ranking reports. The Online College Database recognized the high salaries of UMBC graduates in its list of most affordable colleges.  The website used data from the “2012-2013 PayScale College Salary Report” to rank UMBC as having the second-highest post-graduation starting salary of colleges in Maryland with annual tuition under $20,000.  According to the report, the average starting salary of a UMBC graduate is $50,300.
