The University System of Maryland (USM) is 25 years old. And you are invited to participate in the celebration. Throughout the 2013-14 academic year, the USM is observing this milestone with a look at the positive impact that USM has had—and continues to have—on the quality of life in Maryland and beyond. UMBC Rankings in the News

UMBC’s recent U.S. News and World Report rankings, in which the university was named the #1 “Up-and-Coming” school, and the #6 school for “Best Undergraduate Teaching,” was covered by several media outlets. CBS Baltimore covered the story, interviewing both Dale Bittinger, director of admissions, and senior Kelsey Krach.  The video segment adnd the text are available here. Once again, UMBC has been named one of the top national universities “where the faculty has an unusually strong commitment to undergraduate teaching”

UMBC was ranked #6 on U.S. News and World Report’s Best Colleges Guide’s list of schools with the “Best Undergraduate Teaching,” along with such universities as William and Mary, Berkeley, Princeton, and Brown. At the 2013 UMBC Convocation, held on Tuesday, August 27, President Freeman Hrabowski welcomed incoming students and shared UMBC’s continued national recognition, the importance of the civil rights movement in opening the doors for diversity in education, and what it takes to succeed at UMBC – and in life. UMBC Soccer: Caringi Earns NSCAA and America East Top Weekly Honors

Senior forward Pete Caringi III (Perry Hall, Md./Calvert Hall) started his season with a bang and netted national recognition from the NSCAA, the America East Conference, Top Drawer Soccer and College Soccer News. Caringi was named the NCAA Division I Men’s Disney Soccer/NSCAA Player of the Week for games ending Sept. 1. He also earned Player of the Week honors from the America East Conference and was selected to Teams of the Week in both Top Drawer Soccer and College Soccer News. UMBC ranked as a top college where students get ‘best bang for their buck’

According to a recent PolicyMic ranking, UMBC is listed as a top ten school where students get the ‘best bang for their buck’ in terms of cost, graduation rates and starting salary, and debt at time of graduation. Using recent data for average student debt upon graduation, starting salaries, tuition and room and board for four-year universities, six-year graduation rates, and percentage of students who qualify for Pell grants as rough indicators, the rankings identified the top dozen schools that are performing above average.

UMBC Celebrates Present, Future During Fall Opening Meeting

At the Fall Opening Meeting on Thursday, August 22, President Freeman Hrabowski and Provost Philip Rous celebrated the present and future of UMBC. Dr. Patrice McDermott, Vice Provost for Faculty Affairs, named Senior Fellow at AAC&U

Dr. Patrice McDermott, Vice Provost for Faculty Affairs, has been named Senior Fellow at the Association of American Colleges and Universities (AAC&U) where she will partner with the STEM project, Project Kaleidoscope, on research initiatives designed to increase the number of women and women of color in academic STEM disciplines.

Joyce Tenney elected President of NASIG

UMBC Library Associate Director, Joyce Tenney, was elected President of the North American Serials Interest Group, Inc. (NASIG) for the 2013/2014 term. NASIG is the premier professional organization focused on serial publications.  

Four UMBC Alumni Invited to U.S. National Team Tryouts

Four UMBC alumni are among the 98 invitees for the 2014 Federation of International Lacrosse (FIL) World Championships, where the U.S. men seek to defend their title in Denver, Colorado on July 10-19, 2014. Attackmen Brendan Mundorf ’07, and Drew Westervelt ’07, will attempt to earn their second consecutive team selection. They were both members of the 2010 squad that won gold with a 12-10 victory over Canada in Manchester, England. Midfielders Terry Kimener ’08, and Peet Poillon ’10, are embarking on their first journeys to the championships. The Princeton Review has recognized UMBC as a college raising the bar on sustainability in its 2013 Guide to 322 Green Colleges.
