Stephen Freeland selected as new director of Interdisciplinary Studies

Interdisciplinary Studies (INDS) is pleased to welcome Dr. Stephen Freeland as its new Director. Dr. Freeland succeeds Patricia La Noue, praised for building a solid foundation during her time in the position. In his new role, Dr. Freeland will extend the strengths of INDS. He has particular interests in the interface of science and religion and in using the full spectrum of creative arts to visualize and communicate social science, natural science and engineering. UMBC Earns Accolades in Ranking Reports

UMBC recently earned accolades in three college ranking reports. The Online College Database recognized the high salaries of UMBC graduates in its list of most affordable colleges.  The website used data from the “2012-2013 PayScale College Salary Report” to rank UMBC as having the second-highest post-graduation starting salary of colleges in Maryland with annual tuition under $20,000.  According to the report, the average starting salary of a UMBC graduate is $50,300. Smoke-Free Campus Policy

The USM Board of Regents has required all USM institutions, including UMBC, to provide a healthy, smoke-free environment for all faculty, staff, students, contractors, and visitors by July 1, 2013. In response, a Smoke-Free Campus Task Force was appointed – with representatives from UMBC’s shared governance organizations, including students, faculty, and staff members – to make recommendations about how best to implement this policy on our campus. UMBC Athletics Matches Best-Ever Finish With Third-Place Standing in America East Commissioner’s Cup Race

The UMBC athletic program matched its best-ever finish by placing third in the race for the America East Conference’s Stuart P. Haskell, Jr. Commissioner’s Cup. The Retrievers’ 19-sport program also finished third in 2007-08 and 2010-11 and bested last year’s fourth-place finish. UMBC has finished in the top four of the league in six of the last eight seasons. UMBC won a pair of titles, capturing league crowns in men’s soccer and men’s swimming and diving. On Wednesday, May 1, John Jeffries, dean of the college of arts, humanities, and social sciences, gave the annual history department Low Lecture in celebration of his retirement.  The lecture can be seen below. Jenny O’Grady, Institutional Advancement, Awarded “b-grant”

The 2013 Baker Artist Award winners were announced this week, and Jenny O’Grady, Director of Alumni and Development Communications, is one of nine b-grant recipients. The b-grant Prize is awarded annually to up to nine artists, and recognizes emerging artists and established artists exploring new directions in their work. Julie Rosenthal, Asian Studies, Receives Volunteer of the Year Award

Congratulations to Julie Rosenthal, Program Management Specialist for the Asian Studies Program, who has been named the Association of Community Services Volunteer of the Year for her role in creating and directing the not-for-profit Food on the 15th Program. Hers is one of the 38th Annual Audrey Robbins Humanitarian Award given by the association. The award ceremony will be held on Friday, May 3, in Clarksville, MD.  Food on the 15th delivers groceries and toiletries to disadvantaged senior citizens in Jessup and Ellicott City. UMBC Graduate Student to Compete In U.S. Chess Championship

The 2013 U.S. Chess Championship has been scheduled for May 2 to 13 at the Chess Club & Scholastic Center of St. Louis (CCSCSL), and UMBC graduate student, Sabina Foisor, has been invited to compete. Sabina, an international student from Romania and a Women’s Grandmaster, will be competing in her fifth consecutive U.S. Women’s Championship. She recently competed with the U.S. Women’s Team in the World Team Championships held in Astana, Kazakhstan and helped the UMBC Chess Team finish 3rd in the nation at the Final Four of Collegiate Chess the first weekend in April. Vivian Ekey ’11 Chosen as Rangel Fellow

Vivian Ekey ’11, political science and modern languages and linguistics, was recently chosen to be a Rangel Fellow. The Rangel Graduate Fellowship is a program that aims to attract and prepare outstanding young people for careers in the Foreign Service in which they can help formulate, represent and implement U.S. foreign policy. Each year, the Rangel Program selects 20 outstanding Rangel Fellows in a highly competitive nationwide process and helps support them through two years of graduate study, internships and professional development activities, and entry into the Foreign Service.
