Pete Caringi UMBC Soccer Show to Air Thursday Evenings on Q1370 throughout October

The Pete Caringi UMBC Soccer Show returns for another season on Thursday, Oct. 3, 2013. The show will run for five consecutive Thursdays in the month of October as the Retrievers work their way through the treacherous America East Conference and attempt reach the NCAA Championships for the third time in the past four years. Each Thursday, show host Paul Mittermeier will discuss the week’s action with Coach Caringi and player guests. Tom Beck Selected Chair of the Maryland State Historical Records Advisory Board

Tom Beck, Chief Curator, has been selected chair of the Maryland State Historical Records Advisory Board, the group that connects historical groups in Maryland and reviews Maryland grants submitted to the National Historical Publications and Records Commission of the National Archives. He succeeds Edward Papenfuse, retiring Maryland State Archivist and Commissioner of Land Patents.

NSF PROMISE AGEP Grant Funded; UMBC is Lead Partner

UMBC is pleased to announce that the National Science Foundation grant for PROMISE: Maryland’s Alliance for Graduate Education and the Professoriate (AGEP) has been funded. UMBC is the lead campus on this University System of Maryland-wide, $1.75 million, 3.5 year grant. UMBC’s primary partners will continue to be the University of Maryland, College Park and the University of Maryland, Baltimore, and all of the campuses within the USM will participate. Signature programs will continue with funding for graduate students from USM’s campuses to attend activities such as Dissertation House and Summer Success Institute (SSI). Akshayraj Kore Becomes New UMBC Chess Champion

Last weekend International Grandmaster Akshayraj Kore from India  (FIDE rating 2481) earned the title of 2013-2014 UMBC Chess Champion by being the top UMBC student to finish the UMBC Chess Championship held Sept 14-15 in the Commons.  Kore is a new MS student in CS.Former UMBC chess team member National Master Aaron Khan (2390) won the 5-round Swiss System tournament with 4.5 points in a dramatic finish, drawing International Master Levan Bregadze (2396) from Georgia and unexpectedly defeating Kore and International Grandmaster Niclas Huschenbeth (2537) from Germany. Caringi Earns More Conference, National Honors; Retrievers Rise in National Polls

For the second consecutive week, UMBC senior forward Pete Caringi III (Perry Hall, Md./Calvert Hall) has earned the America East Conference Men’s Soccer Player of the Week award. In addition, the Retriever striker was named College Soccer News’ National Player of the Week for games ending Sept. 8, 2013. Caringi and his teammates are off to a 4-0-0 start and have risen to Top 25 status in both the College Soccer News (No. 24) and Top Drawer Soccer (No. 25) men’s collegiate soccer polls. UMBC’s recent U.S. News and World Report rankings, in which the university was named the #1 “Up-and-Coming” school, and the #6 school for “Best Undergraduate Teaching,” was covered by several media outlets. UMBC Soccer: Caringi Earns NSCAA and America East Top Weekly Honors

Senior forward Pete Caringi III (Perry Hall, Md./Calvert Hall) started his season with a bang and netted national recognition from the NSCAA, the America East Conference, Top Drawer Soccer and College Soccer News. Caringi was named the NCAA Division I Men’s Disney Soccer/NSCAA Player of the Week for games ending Sept. 1. UMBC ranked as a top college where students get ‘best bang for their buck’

According to a recent PolicyMic ranking, UMBC is listed as a top ten school where students get the ‘best bang for their buck’ in terms of cost, graduation rates and starting salary, and debt at time of graduation. Using recent data for average student debt upon graduation, starting salaries, tuition and room and board for four-year universities, six-year graduation rates, and percentage of students who qualify for Pell grants as rough indicators, the rankings identified the top dozen schools that are performing above average.
