The Ocean is Aware: A Suite for 5 Creative Musicians in 5 Movements

Explore the intersection between music and science as Matt Belzer, the 2025 CIRCA-IMET Artist-in-Residence, presents his new work The Ocean is Aware: A Suite for 5 Creative Musicians in 5 Movements, featuring the composer on alto and soprano saxophones, Juan Sebastián Delgado, cello, Dustin Donahue, percussion, Larry Melton, acoustic and electric bass, and Mark Merella, hybrid drum kit.
Matt Belzer, director of the jazz studies program and teaching professor in the Department of Music, was been awarded the 2025 CIRCA-IMET Artist-in-Residence Fellowship, a joint program between the Center for Innovation, Research, and Creativity, and the Institute of Marine and Environmental Technology. During his residency, Belzer consulted with scientists at IMET to understand sensory systems, comparative life spans, and other biological and behavioral processes to create The Ocean is Aware, a quintet for five musicians. The musical material within the suite was be drawn from insights about the way sea life interacts with its environment, their perception of time, and their awareness of humans and each other.
