The Center for Social Science Scholarship, celebrating its fifth year, presents a 5th Anniversary Distinguished Lecture, featuring Joshua M. Sharfstein, M.D., who will speak on Putting the Public in Public Health. This event is part of the Spring 2024 Social Sciences Forum.

How can an academic institution play a constructive role in advancing community health? Not through research insights alone, according to Dr. Joshua M. Sharfstein, a former Maryland health secretary and now vice dean for public health practice and community engagement at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. In this lecture, Dr. Sharfstein will talk about the practical challenges and opportunities in public and community engagement for institutions of higher learning that aspire to heal the world.

Joshua M. Sharfstein, M.D., is Vice Dean for Public Health Practice and Community Engagement at the Bloomberg School of Public Health at Johns Hopkins University, and is Professor of the Practice in Health Policy and Management. He works to develop and promote public health strategies, healthcare payment approaches, and regulatory policies that advance health and equity.
