Arts Alumni Spotlight: Kimberly Patrick and Maia Schecter

Kimberly Patrick ’08, music, is a sound editor, sound designer, and foley artist for film and television and is currently working for Skywalker Sound in Los Angeles. Maia Schechter ’18, dance, is currently performing with Disney’s The Lion King: The North American Tour at venues across the U.S. and is represented by Clear Talent Group. In this presentation by the Center for Innovation, Research and Creativity in the Arts (CIRCA), they each will each talk about their work and respective professional trajectories since graduating from UMBC.


Kimberly Patrick is a supervising sound editor, sound designer, and foley artist for film and television. She has a B.A. in Music from UMBC and M.F.A. in Film and Television Production from the University of Southern California. Kim started her career as a freelance production sound mixer, boom operator and sound editor for independent features and short films in the Los Angeles area. In 2012, she was hired as an intern at Skywalker Sound under the supervision of Academy Award-winning sound designer, Randy Thom. She has since worked as an assistant sound editor, foley artist, foley editor, sound effects editor, supervising sound editor, and re-recording mixer on a variety of films, tv, and streaming series. She has had the privilege to work on films such as Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Toy Story 4, Ant-man and the Wasp: Quantumania and series Star Wars: The Bad Batch and The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. She was awarded a Daytime Emmy for her work on the final season of Star Wars: The Clone Wars and a Primetime Creative Arts Emmy in sound editing for the Marvel series, Moon Knight. Kim lives with her husband in the San Francisco Bay Area and continues to collaborate with outstanding sound teams and industry creatives on exciting projects at Skywalker Sound.

Maia Schechter grew up in Glen Rock, PA, where she began dancing at the age of 3. She continued her studies at UMBC, where she was awarded the Linehan Artist Scholarship and debuted her senior thesis at The Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. After graduating in 2018, she relocated to New York City to apprentice with Peridance Contemporary Dance Company. Maia then continued with Dance Lab New York to work intimately with choreographers, like Lauren Lovette, Reed Luplau and Josh Prince. In 2020, she danced with Roderick George in his film The Missing Fruit Part 1 which was selected to be a part of Sadler’s Wells digital program. She recently had the honor of dancing for Andy Blankenbuehler for the 2022 Met Gala hosted by Vogue Magazine and The Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
