Please join us for presentations by two accomplished alumni, Ellington Carthan ’18, music (jazz studies and music technology), and Linehan Artist Scholar Hannah Korangkool ’15, visual arts (graphic design), who will tell us about their journeys from UMBC to their current careers. This event is hosted by the Center for Innovation, Research, and Creativity in the Arts (CIRCA).

Ellington Carthan is a passionate educator and is an assistant professor of music at St. Mary’s College of Maryland. His presentation, Thriving in the Arts: From UMBC to “Making it” will focus on the three crucial skills that have allowed him to thrive in the arts: Social Intelligence, Belief, and Honesty. His diverse career includes performing, teaching, and composing. In January 2022, Carthan released his debut live album Ellington Carthan Live: Volume 1. Since the album’s release he has performed for President Joseph Biden and Attorney General of Massachusetts Maura Healy. He has also performed at prestigious venues such as Dizzy’s Club at Lincoln Center, Blues Alley, Kennedy Center, Wolf Trap, the National Gallery of Art, Olney Theatre, Prima Theatre, as well as other venues throughout the mid-Atlantic.

Hannah Korangkool is senior graphic designer at the global headquarters of Actalent, a leading provider of engineering and sciences services and talent solutions. Korangkool will share the value of venturing into uncharted territory (sometimes quite literally) and how embracing every opportunity for growth can shape your journey as an artist navigating today’s dynamic and often chaotic creative workforce. With over a decade of experience in the Baltimore area, Korangkool has continually pushed the boundaries of graphic design, expanding her work into creative management and art direction — spanning everything from food photography to stadium-scale productions.

Admission is free, and lunch will be served. RSVPs are requested — please visit here to reserve a space.
