Research interests
My program of research centers on the primary prevention of type 2 diabetes and related cardiometabolic conditions (e.g., metabolic syndrome, cardiovascular disease), particularly among minority and at-risk populations. Within this area, the aim of this program or research is to examine the influence of psychosocial (e.g., depression and anxiety symptoms, subtypes and disorders, socioeconomic status), cognitive, and biobehavioral risk factors for the development of diabetes-related processes and outcomes. I also examine how psychosocial factors contribute to disparities in cardiometabolic disease by race/ethnicity, focusing on Hispanic/Latino populations. Lastly, I investigate novel (periodontal disease) and traditional (inflammation) candidate mechanisms linking psychosocial factors to cardiometabolic disease.Education
