About

Kyle David Bates is a Clinical Associate Professor and the Program Director of the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) Paramedic Program. With over 35 years of EMS experience, he brings a rare combination of field expertise, instructional excellence, and leadership to both academic and operational settings.
A nationally registered paramedic (NRP) with a Master of Science degree, Kyle has taught at all levels of EMS education. His instructional style emphasizes practical application, clinical reasoning, and the development of competent, confident providers. His career spans rural and urban EMS systems, and includes ground and flight operations. He has worked in volunteer and paid roles across fire-based, police-based, hospital-based, and third-service agencies.
At UMBC, Kyle leads the Paramedic Program's academic direction, curriculum development, and accreditation processes. He remains active in the field and is a frequent speaker at EMS conferences, contributing to education initiatives and policy discussions across the profession.
Outside of EMS, Kyle is also an accomplished hockey player and goaltending coach. He has coached athletes at various levels, including serving as a goaltending coach for the UMBC Ice Hockey team. His work in hockey reflects the same commitment to discipline, teamwork, and performance under pressure that defines his approach to EMS education.
