About
Dr. Jinghong Zhang is an assistant professor in history at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. Sh obtained her Ph.D. degree in East Asian history from the University of California, Santa Cruz and the M.A. degree in world history from the University of Manchester in the United Kingdom. She is a historian of modern China and East Asia.Research interests
Dr. Zhang's research focuses on the intersection of social and cultural history and the history of medicine in modern China and East Asia. She is currently working on her first book tentatively titled “Down to the Roots: Dentistry and Oral Hygiene in Modern China.” This book provides the first comprehensive account of the history of dentistry in China and its entanglement with state governance, public health, consumerism, and social norms.Teaching interests
Dr. Zhang teaches courses on modern Chinese history, East Asian history, the history of medicine and public health. She is also interested in teaching courses on material culture, the silk roads, and history of women and gender in East Asia.Education
