Ms. Deborah J Rudacille

About

Deborah Rudacille is a science writer and 2017-2018 Guggenheim Fellow. She is the is the author of three books, ROOTS OF STEEL: Boom and Bust in an American Mill Town (Pantheon, 2010); THE RIDDLE OF GENDER: Science, Activism and Transgender Rights (Pantheon, 2005) and THE SCALPEL & THE BUTTERFLY: The War Between Animal Research & Animal Protection (Farrar, Straus & Giroux, 2000). She is currently working on a book about inherited addiction and family recovery.

Research interests

The ways in which science influences culture and culture shapes science --specifically the interaction between biomedical research and cultural beliefs; how they combine to shape public policy on issues like gender nonconformity, autism spectrum disorders and addiction. Also, speculative fiction and how 20th century authors used narrative to convey both utopian and dystopian perspectives on technology.
