Katherine Carver ’26

A physics and mathematics double major, Katherine stood out at the American Astronomical Society meeting as the only undergraduate among postdoctoral and graduate researchers, presenting original work on supermassive black hole growth just four months into the project. After graduation, she traded the research lab for the Nevada desert as a Night Sky Interpretive Ranger at Great Basin National Park.

Katie King '26

Katie thought that she'd have to choose between biology and dance, UMBC said yes to both. She completed a double major in both disciplines, whilst co-captaining the UMBC Dance Team. Katie is now pursuing physician assistant school, hoping to one day combine her two passions by specializing in working with dancers.

Leah Narat ‘24

Leah didn't think NASA was within reach, until UMBC helped her get there. Through our career services platform, she secured a spot in NASA Goddard's highly selective internship program as a business intelligence intern, where she worked on real projects that confirmed her career direction and even earned her upper-level credit hours.

Xavier Mack ‘16

Xavier transferred to UMBC to study modern language and linguistics when a UMBC professor recognized his potential and pushed him toward a professional dance career. UMBC's dance program and the connections he built there set him on the path to joining Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, the largest modern dance company in the U.S., where he now performs around the world.

Jacqueline Smith ’06

Jacqueline wasn’t sure what kind of chemist she wanted to be until UMBC, where time in the lab and internships with L’Oréal, McCormick, and Walgreens led her to her true passion: academic research. Today she’s an associate professor at Howard University and an NSF CAREER Award recipient.

From the Lab to the Field

Emily Riggs ’26

Emily came to UMBC from Lancaster, Pennsylvania, to study mechanical engineering while playing for UMBC’s championship-level softball team. In her first year she was named to the America East All-Rookie team and helped the Retrievers win their fourth-straight conference championship. In the following NCAA Tournament game against Nebraska, Riggs hit UMBC’s first home run in an NCAA Tournament game in 21 years.
