Youth in Action is an annual youth-led event, hosted by UMBC’s Choice Program. This year’s Youth in Action aims to use art as a means of catharsis and a platform for the voices of youth to be heard in their communities. This gallery and showcase event will feature artwork created and performed by Choice Program and local community youth. The event will be held on June 20, 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. at the Graffiti Warehouse (128 W. North Avenue Baltimore, MD 21201). Click here for more information.

Choice Program Assistant Director Honored by Baltimore Mayor’s Office

Zeevelle Nottingham-Lemon, an assistant director for the Choice Program at UMBC, has been selected by Baltimore Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake’s Baltimorphosis Committee as a Baltimorphosis Changemaker. Changemakers are selected because of their impact on violence prevention in their communities. Zeevelle was selected for the work she has been doing spearheading the Choice Program’s Youth in Action project. Four adults and eight youth living in Baltimore City were chosen as Baltimorphosis Changemakers. They were honored on Wednesday, March 25 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at the Baltimore City Hall Rotunda. The ceremony took place during Youth Violence Prevention Week.

UMBC Partnership with Arbutus Middle School Featured on BCPS TV

Baltimore County Public Schools TV recently profiled UMBC’s partnership with Arbutus Middle School (AMS), featuring student teaching interns from UMBC and tutors in the Arbutus Achievers program. AMS is a professional development school (PDS) in the UMBC PDS Network, which allows student teachers to complete yearlong Education Internships at the school. Eric Ford, Shriver Center, Advises Prospective College Students on Paths to Success in College Express

First-generation and underrepresented minority students can face unique challenges in applying to college and completing their degrees. Another successful summer for the Shriver Center’s Governor’s Summer Internship Program (GSIP) came to a close with a celebration at the Maryland State House in Annapolis on Thursday, August 7. The 2014 Shriver Center Public Service Scholars Programs have all been launched within the last several weeks. This year’s programs, The Governor’s Summer Internship Program (GSIP), the Sondheim Maryland Nonprofit Leadership Program and MDOT Fellows Program have a total of 50 participants from institutions across the state of Maryland, as well as some out of state institutions. Shriver Center Peaceworker Fellows Meet With City Council

The Shriver Center’s Peaceworker Fellows recently met with City Council President Jack Young and City Councilman Jim Kraft to discuss their history of public service and their vision for moving Baltimore forward.
