Broadcasting Retriever Success

Eli Eisenberg came into the world of Retriever sports not as a recruited athlete or a walk-on but from a completely different angle—broadcasting. Capturing the energy of the fans, the maneuvers on the court or field, and the cheers and camaraderie of UMBC Athletics hooked Eisenberg early on. When Eisenberg enrolled at UMBC in the 1980s, he used his interdisciplinary studies (INDS) major to develop a curriculum that primarily focused on broadcasting, American culture, and business and economics. To this day, he credits UMBC for his success and it’s something he’s been adamant about returning tenfold to the Retriever community.… Continue Reading Broadcasting Retriever Success

The town of Ellicott City with a banner in the foreground announcing the 250th anniversary

Her Story of History

Ellicott City, founded 250 years ago this year, holds more than its share of history. The lore of the old mill town is dense with pioneers, millers, astronomers, abolitionists, fires, floods, and firsts, including the nation’s first national road and railroad. Writer Ellen Nibali ’90, English, wanted to tell the history of the town. But how could she condense all those years into something that would both enlighten and entertain? Then she thought of the magic of the musical. “The underlying thing is that I love stories,” Nibali said. “And I always enjoyed music. Then I realized that a musical… Continue Reading Her Story of History

Challenge Met: UMBC Giving Day 2020 a Resounding Success

Each February, the UMBC community reaches together to support student success with gifts made during one 24-hour Giving Day extravaganza. And every year, our Retriever Nation comes through – sharing news of their gifts and reasons for supporting UMBC far and wide. This year’s “Black and Gold Rush” on February 27 was no exception. Several hours before the midnight deadline, our Retrievers blew past the original goal of 1,800 donors to reach more than 2,600 donors and $188,500, with more donations still being tallied, that will support everything from academics to athletics to campus organizations. More than a hundred social… Continue Reading Challenge Met: UMBC Giving Day 2020 a Resounding Success

Starting the Semester with Grit: AKA alumnae donate over 50 care packages for BSU event

Our alumni are all about giving back to the campus community, and the sorors of the Lambda Phi Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha, Inc. are no exception. As part of their 40th anniversary luncheon this past summer, alumnae donated over 50 care packages for the Black Student Union’s Black Student Orientation. AKA alumna Brenda D. White ’79, economics, was there to hand out bags full of snacks, toiletries, and other back-to-school essentials to students at Friday’s event. “Alumnae members are committed to preserving our legacy and continuing our tradition of scholarship and service on UMBC’s campus,” writes Tamara L. Lewis… Continue Reading Starting the Semester with Grit: AKA alumnae donate over 50 care packages for BSU event

Throughout the Ages: Past, present, and future converge at annual Hilltop Society Dinner

UMBC has accumulated a rich history in its first 50 years, rising from a patch of Baltimore County farmland through the social and political turbulence of the mid-20th century to become a university nationally recognized for the quality of its education and its commitment to diversity. This year’s annual Hilltop Society dinner, in addition to being a “thank you” to our donors, carried on that story, as guests dined amid the “UMBC at 50: Sharing the Past, Building the Future” exhibit at the Albin O. Kuhn Library Gallery. The exhibit was curated by Tom Beck and Lindsey Loeper ’04, American… Continue Reading Throughout the Ages: Past, present, and future converge at annual Hilltop Society Dinner
