From Larry Wilt, Director of the Library I am very pleased to announce the appointment of Robin Moskal and Joyce Tenney as Associate Directors, in recognition of their increasing roles in the management and leadership of the Library. Robin Moskal first came to UMBC in 1989 as an Assistant Reference Librarian. Since that time she has held several positions at UMBC, most notably as head of Collection Management and Interlibrary Loan. Since 2008, she has served on an acting basis as the supervisor of Library Accounting & Receiving and of the Reference Department. Donald Norris, Public Policy, in the Washington Examiner

Three major issues are dominating the 2012 election season in Maryland, reports The Washington Examiner: the Dream Act, same-sex marriage and casino expansion. Although large ad buys are expected for all three ballot measures, UMBC’s Donald Norris anticipates that the deep pockets of casino developers will make that issue the most visible. Norris, professor and chairman of the Department of Public Policy, told the Examiner, “It’s the only [ballot question] where the opponents and proponents have nearly unlimited dollars.”

Aimee Howell, Financial Services, Conducts NCURA Sponsored Workshop

Financial Services’ Contract and Grant Accounting Manager Aimee Howell conducted a NCURA sponsored Departmental Research Administration Workshop in Portland, Oregon last week. Geared specifically for the departmental administrator who must have knowledge of pre- and post-award functions, this was an opportunity for Aimee to share her vast expertise by leading participants through an examination of the foundations of research administration in the context of departmental administration—the transactional level. Thanks to Aimee’s enthusiasm and dedication to knowledge sharing, participants left the workshop with an increased understanding of how to apply best practices to a department administrator’s day-to-day activities.

Nelson Emokpae ’03, Psychology, on NBC’s “The Voice”

UMBC alumnus Nelson Emokpae ’03, psychology, will make his television debut this week on NBC’s singing competition “The Voice.” Emokpae immigrated to the U.S. as a political refugee from Nigeria and received his B.A. from UMBC before picking up a guitar for the first time while in graduate school. He decided to pursue a full-time music career as Nelly’s Echo just last year, and has been touring at college campuses around the country. Kimberly Moffitt, American Studies, on Midday with Dan Rodricks

Kimberly Moffitt, assistant professor of American studies, discussed the Democratic National Convention on WYPR’s “Midday with Dan Rodricks” on Wednesday, September 5.  A central question of the hour was the way that both sides are trying to appeal to undecided voters, and whether those appeals are working. “Working class and middle class individuals aren’t relating to [the message of the Republican party] at all,” Moffitt said, pointing out that the Democratic party is presenting itself as inclusive at its convention. Alumna Jeehye Yun ’97, computer science, was profiled along with her cybersecurity company Secured Sciences Group (SSG) by The Baltimore Business Journal‘s Jack Lambert in an article published on September 7th. Earlier this week, UMBC SGA President Kaylesh Ramu ’13, political science, shared the stage with the U.S. Under Secretary of Education and other leaders at the National Press Club as they launched Shaping Our Future, a new national civic engagement initiative (watch video). UMBC’s Liam Paddock Named 2012 ECAC Division I Scholar-Athlete of the Year

UMBC senior back Liam Paddock (Worcestershire, England/Chase Technology College) has been named the male 2012 Eastern College Athletic Conference Division I Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Paddock will be feted at the 2012 ECAC Honors dinner held in conjunction with the 24th Annual ECAC Convention and Trade Show that will be held September 29-October 2 at the Mystic Marriott Hotel & Spa in Groton, Conn. The Honors Dinner is slated for Sunday evening, September 30. Rider University soccer standout Abi Cottam was the female recipient of the award. Alan Sherman and Rick Forno, CSEE, Win $2.5-Million National Science Foundation Grant

Two Computer Science and Electrical Engineering (CSEE) professors Alan Sherman and Rick Forno received a grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF) this month. The grant is $2.5 million in total, and is a part of part of the Federal Cyber Scholarship for Service (SFS) program, whose aim “to increase and strengthen the cadre of federal information assurance professionals that protect the government’s critical information infrastructure,” according to the SFS website. The grant will give students at UMBC from the undergraduate to the professional studies programs a full scholarship plus an annual stipend of $8,000 for undergraduate and $12,000 for graduate students. Thomas Schaller, Political Science, on the Marc Steiner Show

Political science professor Thomas Schaller appeared on yesterday’s Marc Steiner Show to discuss the kickoff of the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, North Carolina. Schaller spoke about the DNC and what it means for the election with fellow panelists Rae Abileah (Code Pink), Neil Sroka (Progressive Change Campaign Committee), Cory McCray (BEST Democratic Club) and legislative consultant Tyrone Keys. Dennis Coates, Economics, in the Baltimore Sun

According to today’s Baltimore Sun, a spokesperson the mayor’s office has stated that Baltimore will not commission an economic impact study of this year’s Grand Prix. The official, Ryan O’Doherty, noted that a 2011 study of the race “confirmed what we know is an undisputed fact and that is the event has a significant positive economic impact,” but not everyone is convinced, including UMBC economics professor Dennis Coates. Coates conducted an economic impact study on the 2011 Grand Prix, based on surveys of race-goers, that showed less positive figures than reported by the mayor’s office.
